This provision is good
The childminder successfully engages parents in her practice. She encourages them to actively share what their children already know and can do. The childminder places a high focus on regularly sharing information with parents to promote continuity in children's care, learning and development. The childminder provides a wide range of toys, resources and experiences. Children actively explore the rich, varied and stimulating environment. For example, younger children make marks and develop their creative skills as they explore freely available stickers, paper and pens. The childminder demonstrates a professional attitude to making continual improvements to her practice. She is vigilant in ensuring that she attends all required training. The childminder works very closely with other local childminders. They meet regularly to share good practice and reflect together on their work with children. Overall, the well-qualified childminder knows how young children learn. She uses and

demonstrates descriptive language very well to engage children in activities. Children develop warm, reciprocal relationships with the childminder. They come to her regularly throughout the day for cuddles and reassurance.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not always place a strong enough focus on what she knows about children to target precise ways to help them achieve their individual next steps in learning.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

focus more precisely on what individual children need to know and learn next to sharply target teaching and help children to make the best possible progress.

Inspection activities
The inspector discussed children's learning with the childminder following the observation of an activity. The inspector viewed all areas of the home used for childminding and observed activities. She spoke to children at appropriate times while they played. The inspector looked at a range of documentation, such as children's records, and discussed self-evaluation with the childminder. The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's qualifications and of the suitability of adults living on the premises. The inspector took account of the views of parents.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder reflects knowledgeably on her practice. For example, she reflects on her previous experience of early years work to make continual improvements to her provision. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder clearly understands her responsibilities with regards to child protection. She is familiar with local safeguarding procedures and alert to the signs that indicate concerns about children's welfare. The childminder fully understands her role in exchanging important information with other settings that children attend. She knows how to complement learning that happens elsewhere. Children benefit from a shared approach to their learning.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder confidently tracks the progress that children make in their learning and development. She has a good overview of what children can already do and, generally, identifies what they need to learn next. Younger children press buttons and share their understanding of how to operate simple equipment. The childminder skilfully encourages them to keep trying as they add balls to a spinning wheel. Children explore and experiment with how their actions can make things change. Children roll and manipulate play dough. The childminder asks appropriate questions and provides time for children to think and respond. The childminder animatedly reads a story and children learn new words as they point at pictures in books.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder ensures that children have easy access to toys and resources. She takes many steps to provide activities that cover all seven areas of learning. These motivate children to initiate their own play in the well-organised environment provided for them. Children confidently explore the space available to them, selecting toys they wish to play with. The childminder skilfully offers additional equipment to children who are learning how to play cooperatively with others. Children get fresh air and exercise and develop their physical skills. The childminder regularly takes them on outings, such as for nature walks, to visit local parks and to attend soft-play groups.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress in their learning and gain an understanding of how to play purposefully. They are prepared well for the next stage in their learning. Children learn to differentiate between colours. They learn words about size and number as they play with play dough. Children make marks and develop their creative interest as they attach stickers to paper. There are many opportunities for children to practise their speaking and listening skills and to develop their understanding. Children engage in conversations with the childminder. They confidently ask for help when they need it and are beginning to learn how to negotiate with others as they play together.
