This provision is good

 The childminder has good relationships with parents. She shares daily information with them about children's care and education. Parents provide positive comments about the provision.  Children build strong bonds with the childminder who is very attentive towards each child's needs. Children settle quickly on arrival and show that they feel happy and content in her care.  The quality of teaching is consistently good. The childminder completes regular observations and evaluates children's progress. She incorporates children's interests into activities and builds on their prior learning. Children are making good progress from their individual starting points.  The childminder takes children on frequent outings. For example, they go to local parks for active exercise, learn about the world around them as they visit local farms and extend their social skills at various children's groups.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has not fully explored ways to further enhance her professional development to build on her currently good-quality teaching.  The childminder does not make the most of her self-evaluation to continually raise the quality of her provision to an even higher level.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 explore ways to engage in professional development opportunities to further enhance care and teaching practices  use self-evaluation more effectively to continually build on the good quality of the provision and raise it to an outstanding level.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed a range of documentation including relevant policies and evidence of the suitability of persons living and working in the household.  The inspector observed children indoors and outdoors as they played.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder and looked at evidence of her training.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibilities to keep children safe. She is confident to identify signs and symptoms of abuse and knows who to contact should she have a concern about the welfare of a child. The childminder has policies that are in line with current legislation and these are shared with parents. She regularly networks at local childminder groups. This helps her to keep up to date with any changes in legislation and to gain ideas that support her practice and enhance her provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

When children begin at the setting the childminder liaises with parents. This helps to quickly establish a good knowledge and understanding of children's stage of development. The childminder interacts well with children. She uses questions effectively to encourage them to contribute their ideas. For example, when sharing a story, she asks questions about the characters and gains the children's thoughts about what might happen next. The childminder regularly takes opportunities during play to support children's mathematical development. For example, she encourages children to count the number of worms they have made while using playdough and to decide which worm is the longest or shortest.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is a good role model. She supports children to understand their feelings and behave well. Children are quickly learning to be independent. The childminder encourages them to practise self-help skills such as washing their hands before snack, selecting their own toys and tidying away after they have finished playing. The childminder supports children to develop healthy lifestyles. For example, she provides healthy foods at mealtimes and ensures children enjoy fresh air each day. The childminder manages children's health and well-being effectively. She is aware of their dietary requirements and carefully provides food appropriately in response to children's allergies.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in the childminder's care. They enjoy opportunities to explore different toys and materials. They become confident learners. Young children are learning to listen to the childminder's questions and show a good level of understanding as they respond. They communicate well, expressing their own ideas and preferences. Children gain the skills needed to help prepare them for their eventual move on to school.
