Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not consistently maintain an accurate record of children's attendance, as required. She does not have a written safeguarding procedure to share with parents, to meet the Childcare Register requirements.  The childminder has not completed progress checks for children aged between two and three years, to monitor their progress effectively, and shared these with parents.  Although the childminder makes regular observations, she does not consistently use them effectively to identify children's next steps and plan future activities. Children do not make as much progress as possible from their individual starting points.  The organisation of the play environment does not fully help children to make choices about their play and add resources independently, and without interruption.  The childminder does not consistently gain sufficient information from parents about children's developmental starting points to help her plan initial activities.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder provides children with a safe and secure environment to explore and supervises them well to ensure their welfare.  Close working relationships with parents help the childminder to support children's individual care needs effectively.  The childminder is a good role model. She consistently praises and encourages children, helping them gain high levels of self-esteem.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 maintain a daily record of the children being looked after and their hours of attendance 04/05/2018

p.2

Due Date

 complete a progress check for children aged between two and three years, and provide a summary to parents of their child's development 18/05/2018

p.2

Due Date

 improve the use of observations to identify children's next steps, track progress and shape their learning experiences to help them make good progress 18/05/2018

p.2

Due Date

 keep and implement a written statement of procedures to be followed for the protection of children, intended to safeguard the children being cared for from abuse or neglect 04/05/2018

p.2

Due Date

 make available to parents a copy of the written statement of safeguarding procedures. 04/05/2018

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 review the organisation of the play space to help children make independent choices about their learning and add to their play  gather more information from parents about children's developmental starting points to help plan initial activities.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children and discussed their learning as children played inside and outside.  The inspector talked with the childminder about her understanding of the early years foundation stage requirements and how she evaluates her provision.  The inspector considered the written views of parents.  The inspector sampled documentation, including children's assessment records, the childminder's complaints record, and policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has good arrangements to ensure the suitability of her assistants. She has a good understanding of her role and responsibility to report concerns about a child's welfare. However, she does not maintain an accurate record of children's daily attendance to protect children's safety in an emergency. Generally, partnerships with parents are good. However, the childminder does not gain sufficient information from parents when children start, about their developmental starting points to help in her initial planning of activities. The childminder evaluates her provision. She identifies ways forward to improve practice, for example, to enhance the outdoor area to extend children's learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder does not have a good enough understanding of children's next steps in learning to plan activities successfully to challenge them even further. She does not complete the progress check for children aged between two and three years, to review their progress and target support where needed to help children achieve well. At times, activities lack challenge and focus. The childminder does not provide parents with a summary of their child's development to keep them well informed. The childminder uses her research and training well to support children to develop good communication and language skills. For example, she provides commentary to young children's actions, modelling the movements and counting as they explore the ball run, to build their understanding effectively.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The weaknesses in leadership and management do not fully support children's welfare and encourage them to learn as well as they could. There is a good range of resources, however; these are not stored as well as possible for children to make independent choices about their learning. Young children demonstrate a strong sense of self and want to do things for themselves, such as pulling up their trousers. Children behave well and build strong friendships. For example, children take turns with small-world resources, playing together well. The childminder provides a warm and welcoming environment, which children confidently explore.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children do not always make the progress of which they are capable, due to weaknesses in the quality of teaching. During their play, children do not always receive the input and challenge they need to help fully engage them and extend learning. However, young children show an interest in how things work, for example, they press corresponding buttons to make the music play. Children develop good hand and eye coordination. For example, they use bats to hit the balls hanging from the tree. Children listen intently to stories and become engrossed. For example, they point, ask questions and repeat vocabulary, developing good communication and language skills.
