This provision is good
Children develop a very good relationship with the childminder and her family. Parents comment that children love to spend time with her. The childminder is keen to improve her practice further. She has identified training to improve her teaching and undertakes research to strengthen her knowledge and skills. Children make good progress. The childminder uses her observations to identify where children are in their learning. She uses her knowledge and skills well to identify what children need to learn next. She plans activities to extend their learning effectively. The childminder has a very good relationship with the local schools which children attend. She works with the school effectively to ensure a consistent approach to supporting children’s learning. For example, she shares detailed information about their learning and development when they start.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Occasionally, some aspects of the daily routine, such as when children first arrive, do not support them to become fully involved in their learning. There are occasions when the childminder does not share sufficient information with parents about how to support children’s learning at home.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during indoor and outdoor activities, and assessed the impact this has on children’s learning. The inspector had a tour of the premises and spoke to children during the inspection. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to on the day and looked at written feedback provided for the purpose of the inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of signs and symptoms which may indicate possible abuse to children. She knows who to contact should she have any concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder’s risk assessments are thorough. She takes appropriate action to minimise any risks to children. She is keen to improve her provision and seeks the views of parents and children. She has clear plans for improvement. Recent improvements to her garden have had a positive impact, particularly for children who like to learn outdoors. The childminder monitors children’s learning and takes effective action when further support is required.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder has a good understanding of how to support children’s play and learning. She recognises the importance of children finding solutions to their own problems. For example, she gives them time to explore whether whisks fit into narrow containers. Children follow their own interests and the childminder builds on this throughout the day. For example, when children are interested in water, she develops this further using water and food colouring. Children are fascinated as they explore the change in colour and enjoy transferring it into different containers. The childminder is keen for children to learn outdoors. She has reorganised her outdoor area to provide more opportunities. Children enjoy energetic play, as well as imaginative activities, in the childminder’s well-equipped garden.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are very happy in the childminder’s care. For example, they laugh and giggle as they explore coloured water with her. The childminder obtains detailed information about children’s individual care requirements when they first start. This helps her to meet children’s individual needs effectively. Parents comment that the childminder is extremely diligent in ensuring children with specific dietary needs are supported well. Children behave well. The childminder has clear behavioural expectations which she consistently reinforces. Children learn about how a healthy diet, fresh air and exercise help to promote their good health. Children enjoy playing outdoors. For example, they play outdoors in the mud kitchen for extended periods of time.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress from their starting points. They develop a good range of skills in preparation for school. Children develop good physical skills. For example, they handle small tools and equipment as they play with water. They demonstrate good control as they transfer water from one container to another. Children develop good relationships with each other.
