This provision is good

 The childminder is caring and nurturing and very proud of the children in her care. She provides a welcoming, well-resourced learning environment for children and they make good progress.  Feedback from parents indicates that they are very happy with the care provided. They describe the childminder as 'fantastic' and comment positively about how the childminder has helped their children to develop.  The childminder makes good use of community groups to enhance learning opportunities for children. Attendance at these groups also helps to raise children's confidence in being part of a bigger group in preparation for nursery and school.  The childminder makes thorough checks of the premises each day and identifies and removes any hazards to help provide a safe environment. She teaches children how to keep themselves safe and supervises them appropriately.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always make the most of her good partnerships with parents to fully support their engagement in their child's learning at the setting and at home.  The childminder's partnerships with other settings that share children's education and care are not fully effective.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen the strategies used to engage parents in their child's learning in the setting and at home  enhance the partnerships with other settings that share children's care and early education.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this had on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of the childminder and persons living on the premises.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibilities to protect children's welfare and keep them safe. She completes child protection training and is aware of the action she must take should she have concerns. The childminder evaluates her practice through her own reflections and obtains the views of parents and children. She keeps herself updated with current early years practice by attending training and liaising with colleagues at childminding network meetings. Secure systems are in place to monitor children's development. The childminder identifies and plans for the next steps in children's learning well.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The qualified childminder knows the children she cares for very well and is knowledgeable about their interests. She uses this knowledge and her secure understanding of child development to provide activities that interest them and help them learn and develop. For example, she knows children enjoy playing with dinosaurs and other animal figures. She ensures they are readily available and uses them to extend children's learning, such as counting and size. Throughout the day, the childminder models lots of language with the children. This helps to promote their listening, understanding and speaking skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are happy, settled and have a strong attachment to the childminder. They approach her confidently and with much affection. Children's behaviour is good. The childminder supports children to socialise with others and understand rules and expectations. She helps to teach them to appreciate and respect differences through explanations, activities and experiences. Children learn about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. They have regular access to physical exercise. They enjoy and benefit from a variety of outings as well as the daily walk from nursery. High standards of cleanliness and hygiene are maintained to reduce the risk of cross-infection.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress and gain a wide range of skills needed in readiness for school. Their independence is developing well and they confidently make choices and decisions. They enjoy craft activities and use a variety of different tools that helps them develop their small-muscle skills in preparation for their early writing. They listen when appropriate and are confident to express their views and thoughts. They use their imaginations as they enjoy small-world play and have an increasing understanding of size, shape and number. They demonstrate impressive concentration skills in all activities and stay focused and engaged as they play.
