p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

This home provides a very good standard of care. The children and young people are making positive progress from their starting points. The staff place the children and young people at the centre of all their practice. Warm and trusting relationships are developed quickly through the nurturing care offered by the staff team. One parent said, ‘They talked about a child I know; it is comforting that they know him already.’

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The majority of the children and young people are attending full-time education, which is an achievement for all of them. Incidents of challenging behaviour at school, which were hampering their learning, are now reducing. This is due to consistent expectations of school attendance and behaviour by the staff team at the home.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The staff team is particularly good at implementing clear routines and boundaries with the children and young people from the start of their placement at the home. This helps the children and young people to have an understanding of what is expected of them. They respond well, and this is having a positive impact in all areas of their lives.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Especially strong partnership-working between the staff and the therapeutic service commissioned by the home is resulting in the staff becoming more informed about the psychological roots of the behaviour of the children and young people. They are using this knowledge to inform their care practice. As a result, the majority of children and young people are developing skills and strategies to manage their difficult feelings better. Incidents of self-harming behaviour, aggression and damage to property are all reducing.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

There is a strong response from the manager and staff team to reducing the vulnerability of the children and young people to harm. Because the staff know the children and young people very well, they are able to identify their risks and there are comprehensive risk assessments and guidance for staff on how to mitigate these risks.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

When children and young people go missing from the home, there is a very proactive and thorough response from the staff to protect them and to encourage them to return to the safety of the home. Staff actively search for children and young people and maintain excellent links with the police, social workers and family members. A coordinator for children missing from care said that the staff ‘go above and beyond’ in their response to missing children and young people.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Behaviour is managed in a restorative manner, based on the positive relationships built up between the staff and children and young people. This is successfully helping the children and young people to engage more positively in all areas of their lives.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Good-quality, direct work takes place with the children and young people to help them Inspection report children’s home: SC462593 4 understand about things that could pose a risk to them. For example, they have completed work around the risks of drug taking, knife crime and smoking.

p.3

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The home is managed and staffed effectively to meet the needs of the children and young people. It operates within the statement of purpose. An appropriate number of staff are qualified or are undertaking a professional qualification.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Plans for the children and young people comprehensively identify their individual needs. The manager understands these needs very well and actively drives through achievement of them or works with others to review them if necessary.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Case records clearly reflect the everyday lives of children and young people. The children and young people are given a wide variety of opportunities to make their views known. The manager is proactive in ensuring that these views are taken into account and acted on where appropriate.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Staff practice is supported by regular and good-quality supervision, including annual appraisals of performance. Staff receive training to help them to meet the needs of the children and young people.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

An outstanding feature of leadership and management is the active monitoring of the home’s operation by the registered manager. In doing this, she ensures that the children and young people are receiving a high standard of care that is meeting their needs. She is adept at advocating in the interests of the children and young people and in challenging other professionals when their interests are not being met. She has ensured that the recommendations made at the last inspection have been met. This has improved the quality of the care provided.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Staff feel well supported by managers. There is a cohesive team of staff in place, who have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the children and young people. This results in the children and young people developing a sense of belonging and permanence, which is leading to improving outcomes in all areas of their lives.

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the differences made to the lives of children and young people. They watched how professional staff work with children and young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care provided. Wherever possible, they talked to children and young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children’s home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people whom it is trying to help, protect and look after.
