This provision is good

 The childminder knows the children well. She plans effectively for their individual learning and identifies their next steps in learning to inform her future planning.  Children are happy, secure and settled with the childminder. She places a strong emphasis on children's personal, social and emotional needs, their physical skills, and their communication and language development.  Partnerships with parents are strong. Parents provide relevant information about their child's abilities when they first start and this helps the childminder plan for their learning more quickly.  Children establish close relationships with the childminder. They learn good manners, behave well and have good levels of confidence and self-esteem.  The enthusiastic childminder accurately evaluates the effectiveness of her childminding service and obtains the views of the parents. This helps support her to make continuous improvements to her childminder's service.

p.1

This provision is good

 Since the last inspection, the childminder has made changes to the play environment. Children can now help themselves to toys and resources and play more independently.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Occasionally, the childminder does not give children time to think and respond to questions for themselves, to encourage them to consistently build on their learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 allow children more time to think for themselves and to respond to questions.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in the childminder's home.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector observed and evaluated an activity with the childminder.  The inspector looked at children's records and planning, and discussed the childminder's policies and procedures.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has good understanding of the possible signs of abuse and procedures to follow if she has a concern about a child's welfare. The childminder carries out thorough risk assessments of the environments used by children to help to keep them safe and secure. The childminder is keen and enthusiastic. She reflects on her own practice and identifies areas for further development. The childminder extends her knowledge and skills, for example, by attending training, reading articles and working effectively with other childminding colleagues.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good knowledge and understanding of how children learn and progress. She is acutely aware of the children’s current stage of development and she tracks their progress very closely. This helps her to quickly identify and reduce any differences in their progress. The childminder plans activities to extend the children’s current knowledge and skills. For example, she introduces them to positional language, such as ‘in’ and ‘under’, as they hide cars and trains in a tunnel and house. Young children demonstrate a keen interest in making marks, for example, with tools in dough, using paintbrushes, pencils and chalks.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder works very closely with parents to effectively meet the children's unique needs. Young children have close relationships with the childminder and seek her out for reassurance and cuddles. Children develop good health and physical well-being. For example, they eat healthily, follow good hygiene routines, and use sit-on toys as they steer confidently around obstacles. Children enjoy a wider range of activities and learn about living things, for example, at the park and farm. The childminder plans activities and has resources to help children to learn about differences, and their own and other people’s beliefs.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points and gain key skills for their future learning. They participate well in activities and are eager to learn. Children develop good mathematical skills as they count and explore numbers, shapes, sizes and measurement. They develop good independence skills, for example, as they wash and dry their hands, and feed themselves. All children are well prepared for moving on to their next stage of development and eventual move to school.
