The childminder is quick to respond to the needs of the families in her care and successfully cares for children at her own home and sometimes in the children's own homes. She offers before- and after-school care and occasional holiday cover. The childminder places a high priority on using up-to-date, well-informed policies, procedures and daily risk assessments to help keep children safe. She knows how to recognise and act quickly should she have any concerns about a child's protection or welfare. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has high expectations for herself, reflects well on her practice and follows through with identified improvements. She welcomes guidance from her professional network and is swift to respond to new ideas to raise the standard of her service to even higher levels. She continues to develop her knowledge through activities such as internet research, reading professional magazines and being involved in

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has made a good start at her new business. She provides children with a broad range of choice, for instance, in activities, outings and imaginative play. She identifies children's individual interests and promptly meets their needs. Children quickly become absorbed in their choice of play and are very content and well mannered. For example, they confidently share ideas and experiences as they concentrate intently on making pictures and three-dimensional shapes from small beads and sequins. The childminder listens carefully to children and makes very good use of discussion to model higher levels of language. Children understand new vocabulary in context and quickly adopt it into their own plans and narratives.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is very welcoming, calm and attentive. Children quickly feel relaxed, safe and secure in her setting. She talks easily with children and adults, puts them at ease and listens intently as they share their enthusiasm for new activities and any concerns. Children are confident to express their personal likes and dislikes, and they learn to respect and consider different opinions. The childminder develops good partnerships with other professionals and is highly respectful of their skills and commitment to the children. For example, she works smoothly and effectively when sharing care with local schools and nurseries. The childminder ensures she keeps parents fully informed and involved in decision-making. Children are very happy in her care and enjoy learning new skills.
