This provision is good

 Children behave well in the setting. The childminder has clear behavioural expectations, which she consistently reinforces. Children understand and respond well when they are reminded about these expectations.  The childminder works effectively with parents. She shares information about what their children are doing and how they can support their learning at home.  Children make good progress in their communication and language development and are learning new vocabulary. The childminder talks to the children and offers a commentary on what they are doing.  Children demonstrate good self-care skills. They know they need to wash and dry their hands before eating and as part of the toileting routine.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder sometimes does not give children enough time to process their thoughts and further develop their thinking skills.  The childminder does not consistently track children's progress precisely enough to help her to identify swiftly when a child may need further support for more specific aspects of their learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 build on the already good use of questioning and allow children more time to process their own thoughts and ideas  track children's progress more precisely to identify swiftly when a child may need further support and to extend their learning to an even higher level.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through direct discussion and written feedback provided.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at a selection of relevant documentation.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector and the childminder evaluated the effectiveness of an activity together.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of the signs and symptoms that may indicate a child is at risk of harm. She knows whom she must contact should she need to refer any child protection or welfare concerns. The childminder places high priority on children's safety. She checks her home and garden to ensure any potential risks are removed or minimised. The childminder keeps her knowledge up to date to help her make improvements to her practice. For instance, she attends all mandatory training and reads childcare publications. The childminder reflects on her own practice and gathers parents' views as part of this process.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder completes regular observations of children's learning and knows how she can help children move on to the next steps in their learning and development. She recognises the importance of children learning through play, which she plans around their current interests. Children have independent access to a wide range of good-quality toys and resources. They use plastic cutters and rollers as they make different shapes using the dough. Children squeeze, mould and shape the dough in their hands. The childminder uses this opportunity to help children to learn about colours, shapes and numbers. She helps children to learn how to share and take turns with popular resources, which supports their social skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder encourages children to follow effective hygiene practices and develop good self-care skills. The childminder provides healthy choices during mealtimes and promotes opportunities for children to be physically active. For example, children enjoy playing in the garden and trips to parks and soft-play centres. This all contributes to helping children to lead a healthy lifestyle. Children are cared for in a home-from-home environment. They are very settled and form secure attachments to the childminder and her family. The childminder ensures she gathers all she needs to know about children at the beginning of the childcare arrangement. This helps her to meet children's individual needs, including any dietary and medical requirements they may have.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress. They develop a good range of skills which prepares them well for the next stage in their learning and for starting school when the time comes. They name shapes and colours and count up to 10. Children are motivated to learn and communicate well. They are confident and happy.
