comments about the provision and are happy that their children are making progress.

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always provide enough time for children to think through their ideas or respond to questioning.  The childminder does not always provide young children with enough opportunities to make independent choices.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities for children to develop their thinking and speaking skills as they respond to questions during their play  increase opportunities for children to make independent choices in their play.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder knows how to identify the possible signs of abuse and is aware of her responsibilities to protect children. She knows the appropriate procedures to follow should she have any concern about a child's welfare. The childminder supports children to understand how to keep themselves safe. For example, children learn what to do if there is the need to evacuate the premises in an emergency. The childminder checks the premises daily and takes effective steps to minimise any potential hazards. She focuses well on her role and regularly completes training to continue to build on her knowledge. She ensures she keeps up to date with changes to legislation.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses children's interests to promote learning during play. For example, when children talk about finding pirate treasure in the sand, the childminder skilfully takes the opportunity to build on children's mathematical language. She talks about quantity, shape and number. The childminder provides regular opportunities for children to develop their understanding of the world around them. Children talk about animals, recalling that they have seen them on a visit to the zoo. The childminder provides pictures of animals and together they look at the characteristics of different animals. For example, the stripes of the zebra or the long neck of the giraffe. The childminder understands the learning needs of the children. She ensures that older children can concentrate and spend a long time at their chosen activities, while younger children can freely choose to move on to the next activity.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children behave well and demonstrate respect for each other. They work together to clear away the toys at the end of the activity. Children develop confidence to carry out age- appropriate tasks. For example, they take their plates to the kitchen when they have finished their meal. Children have regular opportunities to play outside in the garden and experience fresh air. The childminder helps children to follow good hygiene practices. She teaches them how to wash their hands effectively. Children know that they need to wash their hands before sitting down for a snack.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their development. They form close friendships and enjoy playing together. They are confident communicators and are keen to explore the activities provided. Children take part in a range of creative activities that supports their physical development and early writing skills. They are well prepared for their eventual move on to school.
