This provision is good
Children quickly become involved in planned activities because the childminder introduces them well. They are motivated and interested in learning. Children are developing a variety of the skills they will need for their future learning as the childminder plays alongside them. The childminder provides a very good range of activities and experiences that promotes children's self-confidence and emotional well-being. This helps to prepare them for their move on to nursery or school. The childminder has a good overview of children's needs. Her well-organised system for assessing children's development helps children to make good progress from their starting points. Children benefit from effective partnership working. Parents actively contribute in establishing children's starting points. The childminder engages very well with other settings children attend. She regularly shares information about children's care, learning

and development. The childminder actively seeks ways to develop her knowledge and skills to improve outcomes for children. She attends training and works closely with other local childminders to share good practice.

It is not yet outstanding because:
Children do not always have the time they need to think about their responses to questions posed.

Inspection activities
The inspector discussed children's learning with the childminder following the observation of an activity. The inspector viewed all areas of the home used for childminding and observed activities. She spoke to children at appropriate times while they played. The inspector looked at a range of documentation, such as children's records, and discussed self-evaluation with the childminder. The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's qualifications and of the suitability of adults living on the premises. The inspector took account of the views of parents.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder clearly understands her responsibilities with regards to child protection. She is familiar with local safeguarding procedures and alert to the signs that indicate concerns about children's welfare. The childminder has taken good steps to manage potential risks and hazards for children in her home and when they are on outings. The childminder reflects knowledgeably on her practice to further develop her work with children. For example, she seeks advice and guidance from local authority advisers and takes good steps towards making improvements to her practice.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder makes good use of the information gained from observations of children's learning. She focuses on children's interests and achievements to provide enjoyable learning experiences. She tracks the progress children make and provides parents with regular summaries of what they can already do and what they need to learn next. The childminder promotes children's communication and literacy skills as part of a seed- planting activity. She uses pictures to engage children and help them to work out what they should to do next. Children confidently join in and listen well to instructions. The childminder offers suggestions to help children to keep on trying to water their plants. Children enjoy looking at an information book with the childminder to find out what will happen to the seeds they plant. The childminder introduces new words and concepts and encourages children to listen to each other and take turns.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder organises and presents toys and equipment attractively. Children develop independence in their learning as they choose freely from a wide range of toys and activities. Children develop a strong sense of belonging as they form appropriate relationships with the childminder and each other. They are polite and use their manners very well as they share equipment and help each other with tasks. Children benefit from fresh air and exercise and develop their physical skills in the childminder's garden and when they go out to groups. Children gain an early awareness and appreciation of diversity. The childminder skilfully promotes their sense of identity. She points out similarities and differences to children as they look at pictures in books together.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children confidently play, learn and explore in the childminder's company. They gain an understanding of how to play purposefully. Children's mathematical skills are extremely well supported. They learn shape names and gain an understanding of quantities during planned activities. They rehearse number names, count and learn words about position as they play. Children are confident to ask for help when they need it and demonstrate a 'have a go' attitude to learning. Children give meaning to the marks they make as they write a shopping list. They begin to represent their own ideas through play as they pretend to go shopping and act as the shopkeeper.
