and young people since the most recent full inspection

This home was judged good at the last full inspection. At the interim inspection, Ofsted judges that it has improved effectiveness. Young people receive good-quality care from a dedicated staff team. The staff understand the complex needs of the young people and work with them to address their challenging behaviours. The registered manager and the staff have clear expectations and boundaries in place, which the young people are expected to adhere to. This consistent message helps the young people to keep themselves away from negative activities and influences. The registered manager has provided specific training for staff on the main areas of risk. This has enabled them to understand the influences that young people may experience. Staff have the skills to work with the young people. This helps young people to remain safe from harm. The registered manager regularly reviews young people’s progress with all the key

When there are concerns, he swiftly initiates meetings so that the young people receive the required support within the appropriate timescales. This reinforces the message to young people that there is a team that is always willing to help. One social worker told the inspector that, ‘Communication is brilliant and there is always regular feedback. This is the best home that I have been in and they worked really well with me.’ The registered manager encourages young people to attend school. In cases when there has been difficulty obtaining a place, he has actively sourced individual tuition. While the young people’s information and care plans are on file, copies of the approved education plans are not. Detailed minutes of education meetings (taken by the registered manager) reduce the impact of this omission. Young people have developed trusting relationships with the staff. Young people have

completed courses such as The Prince’s Trust, which have opened up further opportunities for them. One young person is working with the British Heart Foundation as a volunteer and aims to secure employment with a building construction firm. This has enabled the young person to develop his self-confidence and pursue his future career aspirations. Previously, this young person was going missing, but this has now reduced in frequency and is well managed by staff. Staff have successfully helped young people to prepare for independence. Each young person has an ‘independence folder’ which details every aspect of living independently. Young people who have left the home have been able to utilise the skills that they have acquired. One young person told the inspector, ‘I get on really well with my key worker and he has helped me a lot. Although staff have a go at me at times, they do listen.’ The young person said that he recognises the importance of healthy eating and managing budgets.

He said that he will be ready to move out and would be able to manage his own property. The registered manager motivates his staff and with them he effectively monitors and reviews the quality of care provided to the young people. The registered manager’s development plan for the home is specific to the needs of the young people. He carefully considers the combination of young people at the home. The registered manager has met the requirements and recommendations from the last inspection.
