p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more learning opportunities to help support children who prefer to learn outdoors  seek more detailed information from parents about what children already know and can do when they initially start.

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is aware of the authorities she must inform should she have concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder is vigilant about keeping children safe. For example, she completes daily safety checks of the environment before children arrive each day. The childminder evaluates her practice and has identified areas she would like to improve in the future. She attends training, which has an impact on children. For example, she has completed training on how to observe and assess children so that she can identify their next steps in learning. She attends network meetings with the local authority where she has the opportunity to share good practice with other professionals. She tracks children's development to ensure they make good progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder regularly observes children as they play to identify their developmental stage. She provides activities which support children's natural interests, generally, while helping them to achieve their next steps in learning. For example, children delight in playing with a range of musical instruments which helps support their physical skills. She supports children's communication and language skills well and provides a running commentary, sings songs and repeats phrases. The childminder supports children's early problem-solving skills. For example, she hides a spider puppet underneath a blanket and encourages children to try and find the puppet. Children are very engaged in this activity and use their listening and concentration skills well. Parents are encouraged to support further learning at home.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder offers a family friendly environment. Children quickly build up positive attachments with her and are content and settled. The childminder understands children's care needs and offers the same routines as they have at home, this provides a consistency of care. The childminder is a positive role model and children enjoy involving her in their play. The childminder encourages children to be part of routines and promotes independence. For example, she asks children to help her as she tidies away resources. Children begin to explore the wider world. For example, they attend play sessions at the local children's centre and visit the local park.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their initial starting points. They can express their needs, make independent choices in their play and build relationships with others. They are active learners who enjoy challenge and are eager to explore the environment. Children are well prepared with the skills they will need for future learning.
