This provision is good
The childminder has a clear understanding of each child's current stages of development and plans effectively to support their next steps in learning. She uses effective questioning techniques to consolidate children's understanding and extends their critical thinking. There are many opportunities for children to visit shops and other places of interest in local the community. These help to extend children's first-hand experiences and strengthen their social skills in readiness for school. The childminder is attentive to children's changing needs and is always receptive when children initiate affectionate cuddles with her. This helps children to settle swiftly and feel very relaxed in the care of the childminder and her assistant. The childminder evaluates her provision effectively. She regularly seeks the views of her assistant, parents and children to help identify areas of her practice to improve further.
p.1
This provision is good
For example, since the last inspection, the childminder has increased opportunities for children who like to play and learn outdoors.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The systems for monitoring the performance of assistants are not yet thorough enough to help the childminder to identify how to raise the quality of teaching to even higher levels.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities and interactions between the childminder and the children. The inspector held discussions with the childminder, her assistant and the children at appropriate times throughout the inspection. The inspector took account of the views of parents expressed in written testimonials. The inspector observed an activity outdoors and jointly evaluated this with the childminder. The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including evidence of training. She discussed the childminder's self-evaluation and checked the suitability of household members.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder passes on an abundance of information to parents verbally and in written records. This helps to keep them well informed of their child's progress and enhances their involvement in their child's learning. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of what might give cause for concern about a child's welfare and knows how to refer these to the relevant agencies. The childminder cascades her knowledge on to her assistant. The childminder demonstrates a commitment to her ongoing professional development. For example, she attends relevant training and liaises with other childminders to enhance her understanding of good practice. The childminder works cohesively with her assistant to help maintain close supervision of children at all times.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder is skilled at introducing mathematical concepts during children's play and routine tasks. For example, she models positional language, encourages children to count and prompts them to identify shapes. The childminder creates good opportunities for children to develop their literacy skills. For example, the childminder encourages children to look carefully at the labels on potted plants, which helps them to appreciate that print carries meaning. Children are provided with a good range of resources which helps to enhance their physical skills. For instance, children make use of trowels to scoop and drop compost into various pots. Younger children enjoy manoeuvring ride-on toy vehicles, which helps to develop their physical control and ability to avoid obstacles.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder and her assistant set a good example to children. The childminder is a positive role model and manages children's behaviour effectively. For example, she carefully considers each child's age and stage of development when reminding them of boundaries and expectations for behaviour. From a young age, children are given good opportunities to develop their sense of responsibility. The childminder encourages them to take the lead in manging tasks, such as cleaning up spillages and tidying away toys. Children's good health is well promoted. For example, children develop a strong appreciation for the origins of healthy foods when planting and tending to vegetable plants in the childminder's garden.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children, including those in receipt of additional funding, make good progress from their starting points. They have good opportunities to acquire the skills they need for their future learning, such as school. For example, they show good levels of concentration during activities and are clear in communicating their thoughts. Two-year-old children demonstrate good skills in self-care and independence. For example, they confidently reach for their shoes and coats and make strong attempts to put these on for themselves. They show determination when a zip proves more challenging to master and confidently communicate their request for help.
