This provision is good

 The childminder reflects and self-evaluates her practice well. She ensures she provides additional resources that reflect children's current interests and develops their curiosity.  The childminder provides a relaxed and homely environment where children develop a good sense of belonging. Toys and activities are presented and stored at a low level for children to access easily.  The childminder knows the children well and monitors their development successfully. She observes and assesses their learning and uses this information to plan for what children need to learn next.  The childminder forms affectionate bonds with children, who show they feel safe and secure in familiar routines.  Children's welfare is supported well. The childminder's home is secure and risk assessments are carried out regularly, to help ensure children are cared for in a safe environment.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder does not effectively prepare environments so they fully support the children in their activities.  The strategies used to promote parents' engagement in their children's learning are not consistently successful.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 consider the organisation of activities and helpful visual prompts to further support children in their learning  strengthen the strategies used to further encourage parents to contribute information about their children's achievements at home.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed all areas used for childminding.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and the children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector observed activities in the indoor and outdoor areas. She assessed the impact of these on children's learning.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder, to evaluate her practice.  The inspector reviewed parents' written comments and feedback.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding arrangements are effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of child protection procedures and what to do if she is worried about a child in her care. This helps to support children's ongoing safety and well-being. The childminder has a good understanding of her role. She forms links with local childminders and uses these to share good practice and help monitor each other's work. The childminder has attended additional training, for example, in supporting children's speech and language development. For example, she talks with children who have speech and language difficulties, using single words and short sentences to help them absorb the information. The childminder provides strong support to children in this area.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder tracks children's development regularly and helps them to progress according to their individual learning needs. She supports children's interests. For example, she creates a toy farm using natural materials such as dry cereal, soil and hay, making it more realistic. Role-play resources are constantly available. Children love to act out familiar scenarios, such as making tea and creating meals. Outdoors, the childminder provides soil and pots for children to learn how to plant seeds and later watch them grow. She recognises that young children's attention span can be short, so she is flexible in allowing them to follow their own ideas.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children really enjoy being outdoors, enjoying the fresh air and exploring the garden, particularly after snow has kept it hidden for several days. Children thrive in the nurturing environment and benefit from the childminder's attention when they need it. Children follow good hygiene routines and learn to understand how to play safely. They enjoy healthy snacks and meals provided by the childminder. She also promotes children's physical health well. For example, they use the garden daily and regularly walk to local parks and amenities, such as the library. The childminder also attends toddler groups, providing extra socialising opportunities for children.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children show an interest in the world around them and enjoy exploring their environment. Overall, they behave well and learn to share and play with other children. All children make good progress. They learn how to use tools correctly, enjoy making marks and discover craft play materials. Children develop skills that prepare them for their next stage of learning and eventual move to school.
