This provision is good

 Children are warmly welcomed and settle quickly into the childminder's home. She builds strong bonds with the children. They show they feel happy in her care.  The childminder knows the children well. She accurately assesses children's development and plans activities to support their next steps. Children make good progress from their individual starting points.  The childminder has good relationships with parents. They are complimentary about the care she provides. The childminder keeps parents fully informed about their children's learning. Parents are happy that their children are making progress.  Children have many opportunities to socialise with others. For example, the childminder takes them to local activity groups and regularly meets with other childminders for play sessions.  The quality of teaching is good. Children enjoy taking part in a wide range of activities. This helps to promote their learning in all areas.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not make the most of her self-evaluation to continually raise the quality of her provision to a higher level.  The childminder does not always give the children enough opportunities to make choices about their play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 use evaluation more effectively to continually build on the good quality of the provision and raise it to an outstanding level  develop opportunities for children to self-select resources and make their own decisions during their play.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed a range of documentation, including relevant policies and procedures.  The inspector observed children as they played.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder and looked at evidence of her training.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents.  The inspector talked to the children during the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of her responsibilities to protect children's welfare should there be any concerns that a child is at risk of harm. She provides good levels of supervision and identifies any potential hazards to children. The childminder has good links with her local schools. She shares information to help support children's move into nursery or Reception classes. The childminder is committed to updating her knowledge. She attends local childminder meetings and gathers ideas to support her current good practice. This helps to develop the outcomes for children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder interacts well with the children. She regularly joins them in their play and provides narrative to help them build on their vocabulary. The childminder provides children with activities that support their early mathematical skills. For example, they use different-sized brushes when painting. The childminder helps to extend their learning and points out the difference in the marks they have made. She introduces mathematical language effectively, such as 'big', 'bigger' or 'biggest'. The childminder plans activities that support children's early writing skills. Young children make marks using chunky chalks on the pavement outside in the garden or on the large blackboard indoors.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children demonstrate good behaviour. The childminder consistently praises children in response to their attempts as well as their achievements. This helps to support their self- esteem and gives them confidence to try new things. Children enjoy daily outdoor play experiences in the childminder's own garden and on occasion during trips to the local parks. Children learn good hygiene practices and the childminder encourages them to wash their hands before mealtimes and after playing outside. The childminder is a good role model. She is kind and attentive to children's needs. She supports younger children to learn the self-help skills they need to become independent. For example, they attempt to put on their own shoes and coats.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are acquiring the key skills they need to support their future learning. They show good communication skills and positive attitudes to learning. Children are confident communicators and are developing good early writing skills. They make good progress and are well prepared for their eventual move on to school.
