This provision is good

 The childminder gives clear rules and expectations for behaviour. She teaches children to share and instils positive values in them. Children behave exceptionally well for their age.  Children feel safe, happy and content. The childminder has formed secure bonds with children, and constantly praises and celebrates their achievements to help boost their confidence and self-esteem.  The childminder works closely with parents to help provide consistency in children's care and learning. For example, she speaks to them at the end of the day to share information about children's activities, and to help them support children's learning further at home.  Children confidently play together. They engage in a variety of interesting activities and make decisions about with what they would like to play.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not make the most of opportunities to work closely with other early years settings that children attend, to help provide continuity in their learning.  There are few opportunities for children to develop their early writing skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 improve partnerships with other early years settings that children attend, to help build on continuity in their care and learning  extend opportunities for children to develop and improve on their early writing skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed interactions between the childminder and children.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector viewed documentation, such as the evidence of the childminder and household members' suitability, and the childminder's paediatric first-aid qualification.  The inspector accompanied the childminder to collect children from a nursery and the local school.  The inspector discussed how the childminder uses self-evaluation to develop her practice.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge and understanding of child protection procedures, and she knows how to report any concerns regarding children's welfare. She attends regular safeguarding training to help keep her updated with current legislation, such as identifying children who may be at risk of exposure to extreme views and behaviours. The childminder carries out a thorough risk assessment of play areas, including walking routes to school, to help minimise hazards to children's safety. She evaluates her practice well and involves parents and children when making changes, to help build on children's outcomes. For example, she plans to gain more experience in caring for younger children and babies, to help ensure that she meets their needs fully. She now volunteers in a local nursery to get the opportunity to work with different age groups of children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder extends children's interests well. For example, on the day of inspection, children showed an interest in the pretend doctor's surgery, and the childminder quickly joined in their play and acted as a patient. She encouraged children to use the thermometer to take her temperature and dress an imaginary wound. This helped the children to remain focused and consistently engaged. The childminder supports children's communication and language development effectively. For example, she uses walking routes from nursery and school to effectively engage children in conversations about how their day has been, and to ask thought-stimulating questions to expand on their vocabulary. She also encourages younger children to count the number of cars on the road and the stairs they climb, to build on their mathematical development.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder ensures that children understand rules and boundaries and follow these to help keep them safe. For example, children know that they must hold hands on outings, and must look in every direction for traffic before crossing the road. This helps to increase their understanding of risk, and of how to stay safe. The childminder provides many opportunities for children to become independent learners. For example, children choose what they would like to eat. Older children are very caring and are good role models for younger children. For example, when younger children did not want to eat vegetables, older children encouraged them and explained the benefit of doing so. The childminder teaches children to be tolerant and to respect people's differences, through a range of activities, such as role-play and group discussions. Children benefit from regular outdoor play and they eat healthy snacks, to support their physical well-being.
