This provision is good

 The childminder shares frequent information with parents about how their children are progressing. She gives parents a range of ideas that they can use to further support their children's learning at home.  Children are very happy and settled in the childminder's care. She provides settling-in sessions that meet the children's individual needs and support their growing confidence.  The childminder supports children's growing language and communication skills. She talks to children about what they are doing and introduces new words into their vocabulary, such as 'circle' and 'star'.  Children delight in exploring climbing equipment at the local parks. They enjoy playing games in the nearby fields and riding on push-along bicycles at playgroup sessions.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not fully seek information from parents about what children already know and can do when they first start, to help assess their starting points.  The childminder does not consistently gather the views of parents and children when identifying and setting targets for improvement.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 seek more initial information from parents about what children already know and can do, to involve parents more in establishing children's starting points  gather the views of parents and children when evaluating practice and identifying areas for development.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through reading written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge of the signs and symptoms of abuse. She understands the procedures to follow and whom to contact about any concerns. The childminder makes good use of opportunities for professional development and training to further develop her knowledge and skills. The childminder frequently evaluates the assessments of children's learning and development. She uses this information to identify any extra support children may need to continue to make good progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder supports children's mathematical development. She counts with children as they put away books they have been reading. During story sessions the childminder talks to children about what is happening in the story and challenges them to find different objects in the pictures. Children are given time to develop their early writing skills as they enjoy making marks using a range of writing implements, including stamps and pens. The childminder talks to them about their drawings they create. She supports children in playing games where they match the nose to the correct animal. The childminder uses this opportunity to talk to children about what is on their face and asks them to find their nose, mouth and eyes.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides opportunities for children to develop their independence. For example, they are encouraged to help tidy away toys when they have finished playing. Children behave well. The childminder provides clear explanations that support children's understanding about sharing and taking turns. She uses mealtimes as opportunities to talk to children about the food they are eating and about food that is good for them. Children take part in activities for different festivals and events. This helps them learn about the similarities and differences between one another. The childminder teaches children about washing the germs away when washing their hands before mealtimes.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their development. They quickly learn the skills needed for their next stage in learning and for their move on to school. Young children delight in exploring musical toys, and they squeal with delight at the different noises that are made as they press the buttons. Older children enjoy naming vehicles as they insert puzzle pieces correctly.
