Inspection activities
The inspector looked at the areas of the premises that are used for childminding, including the outdoor area. The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed an evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector discussed self-evaluation, risk assessments and the childminder's policies and procedures. She checked evidence of the childminder's suitability and training certificates. The inspector took account of the views of parents from written feedback they had provided.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the various types and signs of abuse. She knows the procedures to follow should she have any concerns about the welfare of a child in her care. The childminder has a good range of policies and procedures in place that she uses well and shares with parents. She completes regular risk assessments of her home and on outings to help to keep children safe. The childminder ensures that children receive daily opportunities for outdoor play and she teaches them how to keep themselves safe. For example, children learn about road safety. They walk sensibly when returning from pre-school. The childminder encourages children to stay close and hold her hand. She reminds them to stop, look and check for cars before crossing the road.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The experienced childminder uses information gained from her regular observations of children's learning well. She plans activities and experiences that, overall, target what children need to learn next. Children's development files are shared regularly with parents and parents are supported to continue their child's learning at home. The childminder gets to know children well. She follows their individual interests and children enjoy their time spent in her care. For example, the childminder plays a guessing game with children. Children use their good communication skills to describe animals displayed on cards. They correctly identify some letters found in the name of the animal, demonstrating good early reading skills.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children enjoy participating in physical exercise activities. They confidently act out various movements, for example they tiptoe and roll. Children develop good levels of independence. For example, they take off their own coats and hang them up when they arrive. Children manage their own self-care needs, such as using the toilet by themselves and they wash their hands afterwards. The childminder offers plenty of praise and encouragement. This supports children's self-esteem effectively. The childminder displays photographs of children, which helps to promote a good sense of belonging. Children eagerly talk about what they have done and achieved, and show good levels of confidence in their abilities.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress from the outset. They demonstrate the skills they will need when they eventually start school. Children are keen and enthusiastic learners. They enjoy being imaginative and concentrate well on a chosen task. Children identify numerals successfully and name shapes with skill, such as 'octagon' and 'hexagon'. They show pride in what makes them special. Children speak with enthusiasm about how they have designed life-sized pictures of themselves that are displayed on the wall. They know what makes them similar and different to others, such as the colour of their spectacles.
