This provision is good

 The childminder has introduced a new way of sharing information about children's learning with their parents. This has been successful in supporting parents to contribute to children's learning.  Children have opportunities to develop the small muscles in their hands. They use cutters and rolling pins when playing with dough. Older children roll the dough between their hands to make worm shapes.  Children make good progress in their learning and development. The childminder identifies areas where children need extra help and plans activities to successfully support them.  The childminder joins in with children's hide and seek games. She hides with the baby as older children count to 10. Children shriek with delight and excitement when they find each other.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder's professional development programme does not include opportunities for her to further increase the good quality of her teaching.  Older children do not consistently have ways to test out their developing interest in reading and writing as they play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 expand on the programme of professional development to enhance the good quality of teaching even further  increase opportunities for older children to use their developing literacy skills as they play.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's learning activities and assessed the impact these have on their development. She spoke to the childminder and children throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at required documentation, such as evidence of the suitability of the childminder and household members.  The inspector read through parents' feedback and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good understanding of safeguarding issues. She has information readily at hand should she recognise and need to report any concerns about children's welfare. She takes action to keep children safe in her care, such as making sure they sit down to eat and that babies are secured in booster seats. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder works well with other settings that children attend. She shares information to help provide children with consistency in their learning. The childminder reviews her work and collaborates with other local childminders. They share their good knowledge and the childminder uses new ideas to develop and improve her provision and children's learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder supports children's mathematical development well. When playing with dough they make hand shapes. The childminder encourages children to compare the dough hand to her hand and theirs. They use mathematical language, such as 'bigger' and 'smaller', and recognise when the size is the same. Children explore colours and patterns and they mix dough together to see what colours they can make. The childminder encourages children's speech and language in creative ways, such as by using play telephones. They have long conversations this way and children enjoy their ability to start and stop conversations with the childminder. She makes accurate assessments of children's learning and plans activities to help them to achieve their next steps in development.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children show a developing sense of humour. They recognise their ability to make others laugh and repeat things over and over again to gain this reaction. The childminder responds to babies quickly when they become tired. They snuggle up on her lap for reassurance and comfort showing their strong attachment to her. She meets young children's personal needs swiftly to ensure their comfort as they play. Children learn about being healthy. The childminder reminds older children about washing their hands and resting when they feel tired. She follows a routine that suits the needs of all children.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning. Older children are independent and able to make up their own games as they play. Children show an awareness of safety, such as carefully moving around toys on the floor. Children's behaviour is excellent and they are kind and caring towards one another. They are confident to express their ideas and mix with others. Children display the skills that they need to be ready for moving on to school.
