This provision is good
The childminder is highly organised. She has a range of policies and procedures in place which helps her to provide a good-quality service for children and their families. The childminder has strong bonds with children. She regularly observes them and quickly identifies what they need to learn next. She ensures that parents receive good information about how to support their children's learning at home. Children's behaviour is good. Toddlers learn to take turns, share and follow rules as they play games with the childminder. Children confidently express their preferences and they select toys independently from accessible, well-organised storage units. Children are very confident and enthusiastic learners. They enjoy participating in a wide range of activities. For example, they act out what they know when they look after the dolls, such as pretending to feed them and put them to bed. The childminder has established strong relationships with parents. She has good

systems in place to communicate regularly with them. She values their feedback and uses this to inform the evaluations she makes, to help identify areas for improvement.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not provide enough scope for children who prefer outdoor learning to develop their imaginative play. Opportunities for training do not focus enough on improving the quality of teaching to the highest levels.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. The inspector spoke to children during the inspection. The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands the local safeguarding procedures and knows exactly what to do if she has a concern for a child's welfare. She has effective accident procedures in place and supervises children well. The childminder completes thorough risk assessments. Children quickly learn how to keep themselves safe. For example, they learn to cross roads safely on the walk to school. The childminder regularly meets with other childminders to discuss ideas and to share practice. She works closely with other settings that children attend. This helps her to successfully plan for children's learning and promote their good progress. The childminder has effective systems in place to track the progress made by children in her setting. This helps her to identify any gaps in their learning and take action accordingly.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The well-qualified childminder plans a good range of activities that interests and engages children. She ensures that they achieve what they need to learn next, for example, through careful questioning and good modelling of skills. She demonstrates how to use rolling pins and cutters correctly when children pretend to make biscuits using dough. This successfully supports their developing physical skills. Children apply mathematical knowledge as they sort their biscuits by shape and colour. The childminder has developed an interesting and stimulating learning environment. She provides children with a large selection of resources and supports them to make choices in their play.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are happy, safe and secure. The childminder obtains detailed information from parents when children start to attend. This helps her to get to know children's preferences and make them feel assured. She has recently introduced a photobook of children's family members. This has been very beneficial in helping children to settle quickly. The childminder teaches children to respect people's differences. Children regularly hear praise from the childminder. This helps to boost their self-esteem and promotes their emotional well-being. The childminder takes children on regular outings, including trips to the library and playgroups. She gives children good opportunities to socialise with others of different ages.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress from what they know and can already do, when they first start at the setting. They are independent and motivated to learn. They learn to manage their self-care needs well and settle quickly. Children are well equipped with the key skills needed for future learning and their eventual move on to school. For example, they learn to recognise their written name and can write their name on their work.
