This provision is good

 The childminder understands the importance of working in partnership with other professionals. She has established very good links with other childminders and the local network coordinator, to further support children's learning and development.  Children demonstrate they are emotionally secure. They go to the childminder for cuddles and reassurance, showing they have close relationships with her.  Parents comment positively about the childminder and her service. They say that she provides the children with enjoyable activities, they are well cared for and enjoy attending her setting.  The childminder has a warm and gentle manner, which helps to support children's good behaviour. She gives them plenty of praise and encouragement, which help them to develop their self-esteem and raise their confidence.  The childminder skilfully supports children to develop their communication and language skills. For example, she comments on their play and encourages them to

repeat new words to increase their vocabulary. Children confidently express themselves.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder's programme of professional development is not yet sufficiently targeted on raising the quality of teaching to the highest possible level.  Younger children have fewer opportunities to build on their curiosity and play, and explore everyday objects and natural materials.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder knows the procedure she should follow if she has any concerns about a child's welfare. She is aware of situations that present a risk to children, such as exposure to extreme views. She completes thorough risk assessments of her home and when out in the community, to minimise potential hazards to children. Overall, the childminder has developed successful partnerships with parents. She regularly seeks the views of parents and responds positively to their suggestions. The childminder ensures that parents receive daily verbal feedback about their child's day to help support continuity of care. She makes good use of self-evaluation to reflect on her practice and identify areas for improvement.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder effectively identifies any gaps in children's learning and supports them to overcome these quickly. For example, she uses her regular observations well to track children's progress and plan what they need to learn next. The childminder encourages children in their play to support their learning. She provides vocabulary for the children to repeat and provides stimulating activities for them to explore. For example, during a play- dough activity, children show a high level of concentration as they manipulate the play dough and then listen to new descriptive words. Children develop an awareness of how to use technology. For instance, they learn to press buttons and wait for the sounds and lights to show. Children's mathematical knowledge is promoted well, for example, during everyday activities the childminder introduces early counting skills and mathematical language.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder has good arrangements in place to help children to settle in her care and feel safe within her home. Children settle quickly and develop close attachments with the childminder who is sensitive in meeting their individual needs well. She is attentive to when they are hungry or tired, and is very kind and caring. This has a positive impact on their emotional well-being and their involvement with her and in their play. Children benefit from outings to the local park, where they have good opportunities to gain fresh air and exercise daily. The childminder takes children to local play groups, providing additional socialising opportunities for them.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and development from their starting points, and acquire the skills they need for their next stage in learning. They listen and respond to the childminder's instructions and questions. They enjoy learning and confidently explore the activities on offer.
