Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of the childminder's teaching in the home and outside. The inspector carried out a joint evaluation of children's learning with the childminder. The inspector took account of the views of parents expressed through written testimonials. The inspector interacted with children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector looked at a sample of documentation, including children's records, policies and procedures, planning and the childminder's self-evaluation.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder reviews the service she provides on a regular basis. She consults with her assistant and parents and takes children's opinions into account when making plans for improvement. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder ensures she has up-to-date information to help keep children safe. She knows the procedure she must follow if she has concerns for a child's welfare. The childminder works closely with local schools and with parents. She understands the benefits to children of exchanging information about their education and care with relevant others. Parents express their thanks and appreciation of the childminder's service in written feedback. The childminder supports her assistant well. She provides regular supervision meetings and monitors her interactions with children.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder provides learning experiences that challenge and interest children. She gently encourages children to join in with games and activities that promote their continual learning. Children practise and refine small physical movements. They successfully use tools as they play with scissor-action tongs and coloured pompoms. They explore mathematical concepts as they count and describe the sizes and colours of the pompoms. Babies enjoy the sensory aspect of touching and squeezing the pompoms. They push objects into small cardboard tubes and smile when they look inside to find the objects. Children are confident communicators. They sing songs with the childminder and talk about their interests and families.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder maintains a well-organised outdoor environment that stimulates children's love of exploration. Children benefit from daily outdoor play where they practise their physical skills. They use ride-on toys and a small slide, and enjoy using a scoop to dig in a tray filled with soil, utensils and toy dinosaurs. Children learn about healthy eating during discussions with the childminder about nutritious foods. They occasionally visit a nearby allotment and a greengrocer's shop to learn where vegetables come from. The childminder supports children's self-esteem. She praises them for their efforts and achievements. Children are settled and content during their time spent with the childminder.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
All ages of children stay focused for sustained lengths of time during their play and exploration. They demonstrate intense concentration and cooperation. They learn to share, be tolerant of each other and respond well to requests by the childminder. Children learn skills that support their growing independence. They remove their coats, feed themselves and make choices about their play. All children make good progress in relation to their starting points, including those who receive free early education. They develop the skills and attributes needed when the time comes to start school.
