This provision is good

 The childminder is keen to build on her childcare knowledge. She completes regular training and uses her new knowledge effectively to promote children's learning experiences. For example, she now ensures that children have access to writing materials throughout the day. This helps encourage children to develop their early mark-making skills.  Children form a secure bond with the childminder and her assistant. Children readily go to either adult and demonstrate they feel happy and secure in their care.  Children behave well and show care and consideration for others. For example, children help to serve fruit to one another during snack time.  Children are making good progress in their learning. The childminder uses her observations and assessments effectively to plan for children's next steps in learning and to identify any emerging gaps in their progress.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently make full use of all opportunities to extend children's understanding and awareness of mathematical concepts, such as shape, space and measure.  At times, the childminder in her enthusiasm, moves children on too quickly during their play. This does not consistently allow them sufficient time to finish their chosen activity.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase opportunities and support to help further extend children's mathematical understanding and awareness  allow children more time to follow their choice of play to further develop their preferred styles of learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke with the childminder, assistant and children at suitable times throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including the childminder's self- evaluation and evidence of her assistant's suitability.  The inspector observed children at play.  The inspector looked at children's learning and development records.  The inspector and the childminder evaluated the effectiveness of an activity together.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder and her assistant have a good knowledge of child protection issues and how to report any concerns. The childminder follows good processes to help ensure adults working with children are suitable to do so. She ensures her assistant is confident in all her working practices to support children's learning and welfare. She provides an effective induction process and suitable mentoring and training opportunities. The childminder forms successful partnerships with parents. She knows each child well and regularly gathers all necessary information from parents. The childminder ensures that parents know how their child is progressing and supports them in continuing their child's learning at home. This helps to foster continuity of care and learning. The childminder gathers the views of parents as part of her self-evaluation process.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder and her assistant play alongside children and participate in their activities. The childminder provides suggestions to extend children’s learning. For instance, she encouraged children to recognise colours as she gave them subtle clues about what the colour could be. The childminder supports children's communication and language very well. For example, she repeats words to consolidate children's understanding and to help them to learn new vocabulary as they play.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is highly sensitive to children's individual needs. She provides regular praise and reassuring cuddles. The childminder recognises the value of children being physically active. Children enjoy daily exercise as part of their everyday routines. For example, they confidently take part in action songs and move around the room to catch bubbles in the air. This helps to promote their physical health and coordination well. The childminder teaches children about healthy lifestyles. For example, children learn about the importance of washing their hands and regularly drinking water.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress. They are motivated to learn and are well prepared for the next stages in their learning, such as starting school when the time comes. Children demonstrate they are happy and secure, which fosters good self-esteem and confidence to try new experiences. They gain good social skills and form secure friendships. Children build on their early writing skills, using a wide range of mark-making resources. This helps them to refine and develop skills they need for writing as well as gaining an understanding that print has meaning.
