This provision is good

 The childminder works in close partnership with parents. She successfully establishes a two-way flow of information between herself and parents, so that there is a consistent approach to meeting the needs of each child.  The childminder monitors children's progress closely. She builds an accurate picture of what each child knows and can do, to help her identify and close any gaps in their learning. Children make good progress from their starting points.  Children are settled and confident in the childminder's care. For example, they show that they are pleased to see the childminder on waking up from naps, and they adjust well to having visitors in her home.  The childminder provides high-quality resources indoors, which the children enjoy using. They confidently make choices about what to do and what to use, and are keen and inquisitive learners.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder plans less thoroughly to meet the needs of those children who enjoy learning and playing outdoors. For example, she provides fewer opportunities for children to be outside during the winter months.  The childminder provides few experiences that help young children learn about different cultures and ways of living, to extend their developing understanding of diversity.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 plan a wider range of learning experiences outdoors throughout the year  increase opportunities for children to learn about the similarities and differences between themselves and others in the wider world.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and children in the childminder's home.  The inspector discussed the learning that was taking place, with the childminder.  The inspector took account of the views of parents.  The inspector spoke with the childminder about her understanding of safeguarding and first aid.  The inspector looked at some documentation, including the childminder's policies and children's records.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands her responsibility to safeguard children and knows how to raise any concerns, to protect them from harm. She ensures that her home is secure and very welcoming for children, and she supervises children closely throughout the day. She has taken successful steps to establish good-quality provision. For example, she makes good use of training opportunities to update her teaching skills. She evaluates what she does regularly, to plan further improvements.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children are keen and inquisitive learners. The childminder uses her accurate assessment of children's progress well, to provide a learning environment tailored to their current stage of development. For example, she ensures that there are plenty of opportunities for children who are learning to walk to pull themselves to standing against furniture, and to take independent steps holding onto wheeled toys. She introduces new words to develop children's communication skills, such as by naming toys and describing their size and colour. She makes good use of routines to extend their physical skills. For example, she encourages very young children to begin to feed themselves.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is a good role model. For example, she is kind, calm and encouraging. Children respond positively to this and behave well for their age. She plans successfully to help children manage well the changes to routines that come from starting at a childminder's. For example, she invites children and their parents to visit her home several times before children remain in her sole care. Children show consistently good levels of well-being. She provides varied and nutritious food for all children, and she organises her time well so that children have times to rest and sleep, as well as to play more energetically.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points. They learn to share and to take turns. Children are confident to make their needs known to trusted adults, with whom they feel comfortable. Babies and very young children develop important skills in preparation for their future learning, such as learning new words and identifying different sounds. They develop physical control, such as when moving around the childminder's home and feeding themselves finger food. As children progress towards starting school, they learn useful self-help skills, such as how to put on their coat and shoes, and how to organise and look after their own belongings.
