p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The provider does not have robust procedures for ensuring the ongoing suitability of staff. However, the impact of this on children is low because the provider has gathered Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks for staff that have been conducted within the last three years by their previous employers. There are limited opportunities for children to develop their independence in some areas of their development.
p.1
It has the following strengths
Children arrive happily at the club and settle quickly. Older children invite younger children into their play and they all behave well. Staff consider children's interests and provide opportunities for them to explore a range of activities that reflects these. As a result, children remain engaged and have fun. Staff work well as a team and have access to a range of suitable training courses. This helps them to evaluate their practice and make relevant improvements, such as introducing new activities and resources. The provider is eager to gather the views of parents and children, and she keeps them updated through newsletters. Parents report that they find the staff very approachable.

provide more opportunities for children to develop their independence.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities inside the two main rooms of the club and in the enclosed garden. The inspector spoke to the provider, manager and other staff at appropriate times. The inspector spoke to children during their activities, where it was appropriate to do so. The inspector reviewed a range of documents, including qualification certificates, risk assessments and evidence of staff suitability checks.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
Although the provider has some processes to monitor the ongoing suitability of staff, these are not fully effective. The provider has not requested updated DBS checks for staff or referred to guidance regarding the portability of these checks. Staff are careful to monitor the safety of the premises. Safeguarding is effective. Staff have attended training to help them recognise if a child is at risk and know how to report their concerns if needed. Staff share information with parents about the club and offer visits to help prospective families see the service they offer. This helps children to settle in quickly. The manager supervises the staff team well and is supported by other senior staff. The management team offers regular supervisory meetings with staff, which are used to discuss their practice, share ideas and identify any areas to develop.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Staff know the children very well. They encourage them to get involved in a wide variety of play and children respond eagerly. Children excitedly explore the resources on offer and enjoy sitting together in the quiet room to read books. Children enjoy pretending to be superheroes. They have access to a wide range of dressing-up outfits and masks. Children's play is very well supported by staff. For example, when all these outfits are being used, the manager notices a child wants to join in and helps them to make their own mask with colouring pens and cardboard. All children are included and made to feel welcome. They show off their mask proudly to the other children and staff, who provide praise and encouragement for their hard work.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
Many children spend most of their time playing outside. Staff are positive role models, encouraging children to be active and participate in group games. However, staff do not make the most of opportunities to encourage children's independence. Children are reminded about good hygiene, such as washing their hands before eating. Staff prepare and serve the children healthy snacks, such as bagels with a variety of toppings and fresh fruit. Children are confident and relaxed around staff and approach them happily to chat about their day.
