 The childminder provides a warm, caring environment where children feel at ease and relaxed. She offers them a good range of activities and time to wind down after a full day at school or nursery.  The childminder is vigilant in her approach to maintaining and promoting children's safety. She uses many different opportunities to involve children in decisions, such as finding safe places to cross the road.  The childminder is committed to her ongoing professional development. She attends training and local childcare provider meetings to keep her knowledge refreshed and up to date.  The childminder has established good relationships with other settings that children attend. For example, she regularly speaks with teachers and plans activities to complement and enhance children's learning at school, nursery and pre-school.  The childminder shows care, concern and affection towards children. She greets them

warmly after their busy day and responds to their individual needs throughout the session.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has not fully considered how best to use the views of parents as part of her continued evaluation and reflection of the provision to raise standards even further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 use the views of parents more effectively and enhance the ongoing evaluation and reflection of the quality of the provision.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of the childminder's interactions with children during indoor and outdoor activities.  The inspector looked at a range of documents, including the childminder's policies and procedures, and evidence of the suitability of adult household members.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children throughout the inspection.  The inspector spoke to parents, read their feedback and took account of their views.  The inspector viewed all parts of the home used for childminding purposes.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is very knowledgeable about local child protection arrangements. She knows the action to take if she is concerned about a child or if an allegation is made against her. The childminder has developed her knowledge about a wide range of potential risks to children's safety and well-being through attending training and through her own research. For example, she has completed additional face-to-face, first-aid training so that she can confidently administer specific medication. She is currently completing a module of higher education study. This is helping to strengthen her knowledge and understanding of how best to work together with professionals and families, and improve outcomes for children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder finds out more about how children are being taught to link letters to sounds, for example so that she can help them to consolidate their early reading skills. She also supports children's social and emotional skills very well. The childminder is aware of when children need support to tell other children how they are feeling. She shows children how to do this and is an excellent role model. The childminder's interactions are thoughtful, carefully considered and playful. She takes every opportunity to make links to children's play and activities at home. For example, she encourages children to say hello in new languages that they are learning as they move forwards and backwards on the swing.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder prioritises safety in her home and when out on walks and outings. Children follow established routines and they understand the high expectations that the childminder has of them. For example, they walk home from pre-school with the childminder alongside their friends. They enjoy running along the footpath waiting for the childminder at specific points along the way. The childminder offers them healthy alternatives in addition to their own snacks from home. They enjoy plenty of fresh air and exercise as they walk home from school. They eagerly anticipate going to the park where they play chasing games. They climb up stairs and enjoy the challenge of sliding down the pole asking for help when they need it.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children take responsibility in many different ways. For example, they develop their understanding of road safety. They look, listen and look again, checking for traffic before they safely cross the road. They pour their own water and chop up fruit and vegetables using child-friendly equipment. Children learn to wait for their turn. They enjoy pushing other children on age-appropriate rides and ask them if it is fast enough for them.
