This provision is good

 The childminder develops caring relationships with the children. They settle quickly and enjoy playing with her. For example, young children enjoy spontaneous cuddles.  The childminder follows the interests of the children and provides activities that she knows will engage them. For example, after noticing a child's fascination with the sand, she provides a range of resources to use in the sand. Young children demonstrate excitement as they combine sand with paint, carefully mixing them together.  Children make good progress in the childminder's care, particularly in their physical, language and literacy development. She provides them with a wide range of books from which they pick their favourites, saying 'more' when they finish the book.  The childminder makes good links with local playgroups and other childminders. They share good practice ideas, including information about teaching.  The childminder gathers detailed information about children's learning and encourages

parents to share children's interests before they start. This helps her to meet children's needs from the start.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder completes some useful evaluation of her service but does not always prioritise improvements to achieve the most significant impact on children.  The childminder does not always make the best use of her assessments of children's abilities to include parents in setting future learning goals and to work together to support children's progress.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 sharpen self-evaluation arrangements even further to target improvements as precisely as possible  build further on positive partnerships with parents to engage them more fully in their child's learning at home and at the setting.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke with children throughout the inspection.  The inspector had a tour of the parts of the premises used for childminding.  The inspector observed the childminder playing with children.  The inspector reviewed a selection of written policies and other documents.  The inspector read comments from parents to obtain their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder regularly attends training to update her skills and knowledge. She has a good understanding of child protection procedures and what to do if she is worried that a child may be at risk of harm. This helps her to support children's safety and well-being. Safeguarding is effective. Parents' comments are very positive about the care and learning that the childminder provides. For example, they reflect on the rapid progress children make in their physical skills. The childminder completes comprehensive risk assessments to ensure that her home is safe and secure, and to minimise any potential hazards.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder supports children's learning and development well. She observes children's interests and skills. This helps her to provide a stimulating learning environment. Children receive good support to develop their mathematics skills. For example, the childminder praises young children as they count up to four. She shows interest in what children have to say, encouraging them to use their emerging language confidently. For example, the childminder prompts young children using single words to use two words together and praises them for their efforts. Children smile as the childminder claps after they say 'yellow paint'. Children are encouraged to be adventurous in their physical development. For example, young children climb steps, mount slopes and cross different surfaces while playing outside.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Young children demonstrate pride in their achievements. For example, when the childminder praises them for correctly identifying the play animals in the farm, they smile broadly at her. Young children follow her high expectations of behaviour and demonstrate self-control. The childminder gives daily activities to be physically active inside and outside. She regularly takes children to local playgroups and parks, and supports them to increase their circle of friends. She encourages healthy eating. For example, young children learn to wash their hands and to identify the fruit they would like to eat for snacks. The childminder focuses on developing children's independence. For example, they are encouraged, with lots of praise, to 'have a go' for themselves when getting up onto a chair, or climbing over a step in the garden.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress and are well prepared for the next stages in their education. Progress in physical, communication and language, and literacy development is particularly strong. For example, young children rapidly move on from using single words to using two words together.
