Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC367802 1 SC367802
p.1
North East Lincolnshire Council
Monitoring visit Inspected under the social care common inspection framework
p.1
Information about this children’s home
The local authority has registered this home to provide care and accommodation for up to two children or young people who may have a learning disability.
p.1
This monitoring visit
This monitoring visit was undertaken due to a complaint received about the quality of care. The focus of this visit included the relationships between staff and young people, the provider’s responsiveness to complaints and the safeguarding of young people.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Young people enjoy a warm, welcoming and friendly environment. Staff spend time getting to know the young people and supporting their individual needs and personal interests. For example, staff had just bought a wig for a young person to dress up for a forthcoming Comic Con event. Staff are proactive at promoting the young people’s health and education needs. Consequently, the young people are healthy, have good attendance at school, achieve well and have fun.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The staff are kind and considerate. They listen to the young people and are attentive to their changes in mood. The young people named specific staff who they would talk to and feel that staff care about them. The staff consistently remind the young people of the expectations of the home in terms of daily routines and behaviour. This includes measures to safeguard the young people, such as handing in their mobile phones at bedtime and completing work about e-safety.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The staff are trained to respond appropriately to challenging behaviour. When the young people display aggressive behaviour, staff respond appropriately to de- escalate incidents. The staff encourage the young people to reflect on these incidents and provide support for the young people to behave more appropriately. The manager and senior manager are committed to helping the young people to Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC367802 2 work through their difficulties. They spend time talking to the young people to explore different coping strategies while at the same time reinforce social norms and expectations. Ongoing concerns about risks to the young people’s welfare from their behaviour are reviewed with the local authority to assess if a placement is still suitable. This helps to protect the young people and prevents unnecessary criminalisation.
p.1
This monitoring visit
The staff complete safeguarding training and are confident in using the whistleblowing procedure should this be needed. Staff morale is high and there is good cohesive teamwork. The team of staff members reflect on their care practice during team meetings and in individual supervision, putting the needs of the young people first and foremost. The staff receive regular supervision but records of one- to-one supervisions are not kept up to date and shared with respective staff members. The last complaint has not been entered into the home’s complaints records together with information about the action taken and the outcome. These recording shortfalls compromise the management’s oversight of the home, especially with regards to staff performance and ensuring that any lessons learned from complaints contribute to improving the service.
