Outcomes for children Requires improvement
p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder has not effectively updated her knowledge of the requirements of the early years foundation stage. For example, she shows a limited understanding of how to monitor children's achievements to assess their progress accurately. The childminder does not understand the need to complete the progress check for children between the ages of two and three years. The childminder has not renewed her training for paediatric first aid as required. This breach of requirements also applies to the Childcare Register. The childminder is not robust enough in her understanding of how to effectively monitor and evaluate the quality of her practice to ensure she continues to improve.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The childminder is aware of all aspects of safeguarding matters. For example, she knows how to act on a child protection concern and the procedures to follow. The childminder uses her policies, procedures and risk assessments to support the health, safety and well-being of children. Children show they enjoy attending. They have a warm bond with the childminder. Children behave very well and show respect for each other. They understand the routines of the day and the childminder's expectations.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:
p.2
Due Date
improve knowledge and understanding of the early years foundation stage requirements, to be able to effectively observe, assess and plan for children's learning and development in all areas, and know how to complete the progress check for children aged two years 30/03/2018
p.2
Due Date
ensure training for paediatric first aid is renewed and does not lapse, to ensure medical emergencies can be responded to promptly. 30/03/2018

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:
p.2
Due Date
tackle areas of weakness through reflective practice, to evaluate and improve knowledge and understanding and develop the quality of provision.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector spoke with the childminder about how she plans for children's learning and the aims of activities. The inspector observed the childminder during her interactions with children as they played indoors and outdoors. The inspector sampled the childminder's documentation and children's records. The inspector spoke to the childminder about how she updates her skills and knowledge. The inspector discussed with the childminder how she reflects on her practice and how she works with parents and other professionals involved in children's care.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The childminder has an appropriate understanding of her role. However, she has not renewed her training in paediatric first aid as she is required to every three years. The childminder has completed this training in the past however, and has arranged a course to update her knowledge. This minimises the impact of this breach. The childminder is a member of a professional organisation and utilises this to update her skills, for example, for training courses that help her improve outcomes for children. She also shares practice ideas with colleagues who also work as childminders. However, the childminder has not evaluated well enough to reflect on her practice and what else she needs to do, to improve. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder demonstrates understanding of all aspects of safeguarding matters. She knows what to do to protect children in her care.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
The childminder offers children a range of activities and resources to support their needs. Overall, she interacts warmly with children to support their motivation to join in. The childminder meets with parents prior to children starting at the setting. This helps her to be aware of the things children enjoy doing. She uses systems to monitor the progress of children. However, these systems are not fully effective. Although the childminder can identify children's achievements, she is not able to confidently identify any gaps in their learning. She is not planning well enough for children's individual next steps. The childminder does not fully understand the requirement for the progress check assessment for children aged two years. Partnerships with others who share the care of children are established. These enable the childminder to offer consistency for children's care and learning. The childminder takes time to talk regularly with parents about their child's day.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder is a warm and caring role model. She encourages children's healthy lifestyles. For example, children regularly play in the garden, visit local parks and walk to school. The childminder works in partnership with parents to ensure children eat nutritious meals and snacks. The childminder helps children to learn about self-care routines and encourages younger children as they show more awareness. Children learn about differences. For example, children greet others speaking in the languages they also learn at home. The childminder helps children to develop good understanding about their own safety, for example, getting into and out of the car safely and the rules for leaving the house.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Children enjoy time at the setting and make appropriate progress in their learning. For example, younger children practise counting when they walk up and down the stairs with the childminder. They enjoy time outdoors and learn how to balance, steer and manoeuvre on balance bicycles and tricycles. Children show some confidence and independence during their play and are content to make choices about what to do. Overall, they are ready for the next stages of their learning.
