This provision is good

 The childminder makes good use of outings to broaden children's experiences and to help them to develop an awareness of the local community.  Children make good progress from their starting points. The childminder observes children at play and plans activities that they enjoy and that support their ongoing learning and development overall.  Children enjoy strong attachments with the childminder and his co-childminder. They happily seek out either of the childminders for help, support or comfort. Children are happy, they settle well and are emotionally secure.  The childminder has a clear overview of his overall effectiveness and he demonstrates a good commitment to make further improvement. For example, since the last inspection he has enhanced arrangements to support more effective information sharing with parents. This helps promote children's continued learning at home.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always use his observations of children to precisely identify the next steps in children's learning to help them make the best possible progress in their learning.  The childminder does not consistently help young children to develop their early writing skills further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 track children's next steps even more precisely to help children make the best possible progress in their learning  enhance opportunities for children to practise their early writing skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke with the childminder, co-childminder and children at suitable times throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including the suitability checks of those living or working on the premises.  The inspector observed children at play.  The inspector looked at children's learning and development records.  The inspector and the childminder evaluated the effectiveness of an activity.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of how to identify and report any child protection concerns. He works closely with his co-childminder to identify any risks or potential hazards at home and during outings. He ensures the ratio of adults to children is correct and gives high supervision to children at all times. The childminder understands his responsibility to inform Ofsted of any significant changes or events. The childminder keeps his childcare knowledge up to date to help him support children's learning and development. For example, he accesses training and has discussions with other childminders.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a secure understanding of child development. His good interactions help children to think creatively and acquire good physical skills. The childminder provides children with a wealth of easily accessible toys and resources and he promotes their independence well. He interacts with children as they play, providing support and challenge when needed. The childminder promotes children's learning and uses effective questioning and role modelling skills to extend their thinking. For example, he encourages children to describe the cars they are playing with, count and match the vehicles. This helps children to learn about number and size.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder works closely with parents to establish children's interests, care needs and routines from the start. He uses this information to get to know children and this helps them to settle into his care well. The childminder is a good role model and values each child's contributions. He supports children's good health well. Children learn about hygiene practices, enjoy healthy snacks and drinks and participate in a variety of physical activities.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are confident and are self-assured in new and social situations, including toddler groups and meeting new visitors to the childminder's home. They are motivated and make good progress in their learning and development. Children enjoy looking at books and use good mathematical skills to complete puzzles. Young children are developing good independence skills. For example, they learn how to feed themselves and help themselves to their drinks. They are kind, caring and considerate to others and behave very well. Children develop skills that prepare them well for their next stage in learning, including starting school.
