p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 develop children's understanding of how to keep healthy  provide more opportunities for parents to become involved and help them guide their children's learning at home.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities in the playroom.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of a chosen activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder and her assistant.  The inspector spoke with parents during the inspection.  The inspector reviewed relevant documentation the childminder is required to complete and checked evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household and working with children.

p.3

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is inadequate

Arrangements for safeguarding are ineffective. The childminder lacks the knowledge and skills to enable her to meet the safeguarding and welfare requirements, compromising children's well-being. She does not have an understanding of current safeguarding legislation and wider child protection issues, such as radicalisation and exploitation. However, the childminder is aware of her responsibilities to report changes to Ofsted regarding her setting or personal circumstances. She works closely with her assistant and has supported her to obtain a childcare qualification. However, the quality of teaching is poor and the childminder's monitoring of children's abilities and learning is too weak to have any impact on their progress. Parents are made aware of the daily activities their children take part in. However, they are not encouraged to be involved in supporting their children's learning at home.

p.4

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is inadequate

The childminder has a poor understanding of the learning and development requirements and how children learn. She does not consistently gather information from parents about children's abilities when they first start. This means that the childminder is unable to accurately monitor and track children's progress. Observations are sometimes gathered and collated in the children's individual files to show the activities they have completed or enjoyed. However, observations and assessments are not used effectively to identify any gaps in children's progress or to plan for each child's future development and individual needs. Activities are not adapted to challenge or support children of differing ages and do not engage children. As a result, children do not make the progress of which they are capable. Children are beginning to learn about some cultural festivals. However, the childminder has not strengthened her understanding of how to promote their awareness

of the diverse communities they live in beyond their immediate environment.

p.4

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate

The weaknesses in leadership and management have a significant impact on children's welfare. In addition, children are not consistently supported to develop an understanding of how to keep themselves healthy. For example, they are not encouraged to wash their hands before eating, tables are not cleaned before food is served and children sometimes share dummies as this goes unnoticed by the childminder and her assistant. However, in general, the childminder does provide a welcoming environment for children and their families.

p.4

Outcomes for children are inadequate

Expectations for children are not high enough and the older children do not show readiness for school. Although children are settled and show some imagination and curiosity when accessing the play area, they often lose concentration due to a lack of focused activities that interest them. However, they take turns and have awareness for one another. Children have some opportunities to develop independence skills. For example, they can select their resources themselves and help to put their own plates away after lunch. Nonetheless, children do not make the progress of which they are capable.
