This provision is good
The childminder has high expectations for children's behaviour. The childminder and his assistant are positive role models and they show children how to be kind and caring through play. The childminder offers consistent and high levels of praise and encouragement to children. This helps to support their confidence, motivation and self-esteem. The childminder takes positive steps to evaluate his practice and to make improvements. He receives complimentary feedback from parents about the care he provides. Children are eager to join in with activities and approach their play with enthusiasm. The childminder and his assistant successfully follow children's lead when joining in with their play. The childminder and his assistant help to promote children's personal care skills well. This supports children in developing their skills in readiness for the next stage in their learning.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Children have access to a range of toys and equipment. However, there are few opportunities for children to independently explore natural materials and textures that help provide sensory experiences. The childminder and assistant do not fully make the most of opportunities to develop children's problem-solving skills during play.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector was given a tour of the areas of the home used for childminding purposes. The inspector looked at children's records, a sample of policies and evidence of the suitability of the childminder and other adults in the household. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good range of policies in place that he uses well to help keep children safe. He is aware of the various types and signs of abuse. The childminder knows what to do should he have any concerns about the children's welfare. He attends required training and holds a current first-aid qualification. The childminder effectively uses risk assessments to identify and minimise potential hazards in his home, garden and while on outings. Children learn how to keep themselves safe. The childminder supports his assistant effectively and they work well as a team.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder has a good knowledge of how children learn and develop. He helps to promote their understanding of the world and mathematics particularly well. For example, children learn about nature as they find a spider in the garden. The childminder holds the spider and encourages the children to closely examine and talk about the features of the spider. He explains how they need to be gentle with the spider so that they do not hurt it. Children engage in discussion with each other and the childminder as they watch the spider intently. This helps to promote their exploration of the world and their speaking skills well. The childminder teaches children new words as he names the animals in the ice and water tray and describes their features. The childminder completes the progress check for children aged between two and three years and provides parents with a copy for their child's health visitor.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder and his assistant form secure emotional attachments with children. He knows children very well and responds to their every need. For example, he readily recognises when children become tired and provides a calm and relaxing environment to help soothe them off to sleep. The childminder and his assistant provide a whole host of opportunities that help to promote children's good health. For example, he engages children in outdoor learning. Overall, the childminder supports children to develop their independence skills which help to equip them well for their future learning. He ensures parents are kept well informed about their children's progress to ensure continuity in their learning. The childminder is a good role model, he demonstrates good manners and supports children to learn social skills, such as sharing.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress in their learning and development during their time with the childminder and his assistant. Therefore, they are well prepared with the skills they require in readiness for school. They are happy and develop good emotional attachments with the childminder and other children that attend.
