ensure that they all receive quality interactions and she meets their needs well.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not make the best use of the outdoor provision to support children's learning as fully as possible.  The childminder has not fully considered how to enable children to explore creative activities more freely.

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection and carried out a joint evaluation of the teaching and learning with the childminder.  The inspector viewed the areas of the childminder's home used by children.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as policies and children's records.  The inspector took account of parents' views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to protect children and has clear procedures in place if she has any concerns. Partnerships with parents and other providers are good. The childminder keeps parents well informed about children's welfare and learning. They work well together to support children's learning at home and in the setting. The childminder is committed to improving her practice and regularly updates her professional skills to extend children's learning experiences. For instance, recent training helped her to review and enhance arrangements for communicating with parents and other providers about children's needs.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder effectively monitors children's progress and identifies any gaps in their learning. She makes good use of observations to identify children's next steps in learning. She plans suitably challenging activities based on their individual interests. For example, she adapts activities to follow children's emerging play ideas. The childminder provides stimulating activities that encourage very young children to explore and make new discoveries. Babies enjoy using their hands to investigate a range of sensory items, such as textured fabrics and cereals. The childminder plans opportunities for children to practise their physical skills. Babies negotiate obstacles, such as climbing over a stack of cushions. They balance carefully as they bend down to pick up items they are collecting.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder successfully helps children to develop their understanding of communities beyond their immediate experiences. They learn about a range of festivals and the different ways that children celebrate these with their families. This helps them to understand and respect their differences. The childminder is a good role model and manages children's behaviour well. Children learn to share, take turns and play cooperatively. They develop good social skills; happily involve others in their play and show concern when a friend becomes upset.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are curious and confident learners. They sustain their interest well on their chosen activities, make decisions in their play and are inventive. For example, they enjoy the effects created as they tap crayons on different surfaces. Children develop good literacy skills and enjoy making marks with crayons and sharing books. They listen attentively and join in with action songs and rhymes. Babies and young children are independent and recognise their own needs. They decide when they are ready for a sleep and organise their own cushions and blankets in preparation for this.
