This provision is good
The childminder has a good programme of professional development. For example, she recently completed training on identifying and supporting patterns in children's play. This has helped her to provide opportunities for children to learn and find meaning in their play. For example, she noticed children like to transport toys so she provided buckets and bags for them to use to do this. The childminder knows the children well. She monitors children's progress accurately and this helps her to plan suitably challenging activities that help them to achieve their next steps in learning. The childminder gives praise to help children to build good self-esteem and confidence. Children have secure emotional well-being. Children make good progress from their starting points and are well prepared for their next stage of learning, including starting nursery.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Occasionally, the childminder helps children without encouraging them to try for themselves first. This does not help them to develop their independence further or give them the opportunity to try to solve problems. Although the childminder provides healthy lunches, her snacks are not as well balanced and nutritious. For example, she gives children a tiny portion of fruit and a big chocolate biscuit. This does not fully help them to learn about healthy lifestyles.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector reviewed a sample of documentation. The inspector observed the childminder interacting with children and observed children playing. The inspector and childminder participated in a joint evaluation of an activity. The inspector and childminder discussed children's progress and parents' partnerships.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder has a strong self-evaluation process. For example, she reflects accurately on her practice, considers what she does well and on what she can improve. She uses robust self-evaluation to help her target areas to develop further in her provision. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her procedures. She knows what to do if she identifies a child protection concern, to protect children's welfare. Parents' feedback shows that the childminder builds strong partnerships with parents. She communicates effectively with parents to share children's achievements. For example, she shares observations and photos of children's achievements with parents and they reciprocate. This effective partnership working helps her to fully support children's development and care needs.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder helps children to learn mathematical skills in an active and enjoyable way, for example, through playing turn-taking games that encourage them to learn about telling the time. Children participate enthusiastically and learn to take the right amount of steps according to the number called. The childminder communicates well with children. She skilfully questions them, gives them time to respond to her and helps them to learn new vocabulary. Children have good communication skills. The childminder provides opportunities for children to be creative. For example, she helps them dress up in superhero costumes and pretend to be their chosen characters. She provides children with a wide variety of materials, including colouring pens, to give them opportunities to draw and develop their literacy skills.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder promotes children's good behaviour in a positive way. For example, she encourages children to share and encourages them to apologise when their behaviour is not acceptable. The childminder takes good steps to keep children safe. For example, she supervises children well and prevents them from accessing certain areas of her home, such as the kitchen. The childminder provides engaging opportunities for children to learn to socialise and experience other learning environments outside of her home. For example, children enjoy ballet and visits to playgroups, which also help to promote their physical well-being. Children develop their confidence in other environments and with different routines, which helps them to be ready to start nursery or school.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children confidently express themselves and share their thoughts, needs and ideas. Children use their imaginations well. For example, they make a pretend bath for their special toys and then pretend to dry the toys in the sunshine. They are motivated to play with resources that the childminder provides. They actively participate in play that helps them to develop their physical coordination, such as moulding play dough. Children show affection toward their friends and play well together.
