Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. The inspector spoke to parents and took account of their views from feedback provided by the childminder for the inspection. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder and spoke with children during the inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge of the procedures to follow should she have any concerns about a child in her care. She uses risk assessments to help ensure her home is safe and secure for children. The childminder continues to develop her knowledge and skills through training opportunities. She recognises the importance of working together with other professionals and local settings. The childminder has established a good relationship with the local school and pre-school to help promote continuity in children's care and learning. She regularly observes and assesses children's learning to keep track of their achievements.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder is well qualified and uses her knowledge effectively to support children to progress in their learning through purposeful play experiences. She engages children in meaningful conversation and uses questions skilfully to extend their thinking and progress their learning. The childminder introduces them to new words and children make connections with what they already know. For example, they link the colours of the red and green dough they are playing with to the colours of traffic lights. The childminder supports children's mathematical learning well. She helps children to count, make comparisons about size and use positional language. For example, children talk about circular shapes, comparing them to footballs. Children enjoy role play. For example, they pretend to iron the dolls' clothes and vacuum the carpet. They tell visitors that a real iron gets hot on the bottom and you need to be careful so you do not burn yourself.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder promotes children's independence well. She organises her resources and space successfully to enable children to make choices in their play. She successfully promotes children's understanding of healthy lifestyles through routine activities and discussion. The childminder supports children's social skills and raises their awareness of the community in which they live. For example, she makes good use of local facilities to enhance children's learning experiences. The childminder promotes children's physical activity. For example, they enjoy walking around local lakes to explore the wildlife and regularly attend a range of activity groups.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are confident, individual learners who are eager to explore and discover. They develop positive attitudes to learning and concentrate for long periods on activities that capture their attention. Children gain the skills they need to prepare them well for their next stage in learning and for their eventual move on to school. For example, children learn to manage their own hygiene effectively.
