This provision is good

 The childminder knows the children well. She regularly assesses their level of development and provides well-planned activities to ensure they continue to make good progress in their learning.  Children behave well. Clear consistent boundaries and expectations ensure they develop an understanding of acceptable behaviour. The childminder builds their self- esteem and confidence well. She recognises and celebrates children's achievements.  The childminder communicates well with parents and supports them in extending their children's learning at home. Parents report that they appreciate the wide variety of activities she offers children and that children make very good progress in her care.  The childminder is committed to continually improving the quality of her provision. She reflects effectively on her practice and seeks the views of parents to support this. She uses this information well to identify where positive improvements can be made.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder's professional development is not consistently focused on building specific skills to raise the quality of her teaching even further.  The childminder does not make the strongest possible links with other settings that children attend to enable them to share information about their learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend the use of more targeted professional development opportunities to strengthen existing knowledge and teaching skills even further  build stronger links with other settings that children attend and promote a more shared approach to supporting their progress.

p.2

She spoke to the childminder and children throughout the inspection.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder and discussed the impact of the teaching on children's progress.  The inspector looked at records and documentation, including evidence of the suitability of adults living in the household.  The inspector took account of parents' views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the steps to take if she has a concern about a child's welfare. She has a good range of policies and procedures that she uses well and shares with parents. The childminder carries out risk assessments of her home and before outings. She ensures that the environment is safe and secure for children to play, and that they remain safe when out and about. The childminder accurately tracks the good progress children make and is quick to identify any early gaps in their development, and target future learning objectives accordingly.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is passionate about her role and teaches with enthusiasm. The childminder provides a varied selection of interesting activities that encourage learning. For example, children investigate technology, which also ignites their interest in how things work. They use a wide range of resources to experiment with making marks and the childminder provides additional resources on request. The quality of teaching is good. The childminder is positive and sensitive in her interaction with children. She guides and supports where needed as children bake and make gingerbread men. Literacy skills are supported effectively as children read recipes and enjoy the story. This helps to develop children's understanding that print carries meaning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder ensures children have familiar activities and routines, which enhance their sense of security, and they behave well. She provides children with regular opportunities for outdoor play. They practise their physical skills, for example, as they play in the garden. Children go on regular visits to local groups to socialise with larger numbers of children and to support their social development. The childminder helps children to understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle, as they make choices from the selection of foods available at lunchtime.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children progress well from their individual starting points in preparation for the move on to school. They begin to develop very good social skills and play cooperatively. Children communicate confidently with others, including visitors, to make their thoughts and needs known. They develop a good understanding of mathematical concepts. For example, they recognise numbers in a baking activity as they weigh ingredients and make comparison in size using words, such as 'large', 'medium' and 'small'.
