This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
At times, the provider does not ensure that a suitably qualified manager or deputy is in charge on the premises when children are present. Staff and children do not have consistent opportunities to learn the procedures to follow in the event of an emergency. Self-evaluation does not effectively identify all weaknesses to practice and in the provision. Staff have not considered ways to keep background noise to the minimum to help support children's listening skills further.
p.1
It has the following strengths
Staff support children well to help them build on their early mathematical skills. For example, they help older children complete jigsaw puzzles and young children learn to count the spots on a toy ladybird. Children develop skills that help prepare them well for their future learning. Children build on their independence. For instance, older children learn to zip up their coat. Staff acknowledge their achievements, such as when they praise them and give them a 'high five'. Children gain confidence in their abilities and develop positive self- esteem. Staff plan well to help support children's interest in stories. They question them skilfully to help encourage their responses and children learn to use picture clues to comment on what is happening.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities
The inspection was carried out following Ofsted's risk assessment process. The inspector observed children and how staff interacted with them. The inspector carried out a joint observation with the manager and assessed arrangements for monitoring staff practice. The inspector took account of the views of parents, staff and children. The inspector held discussions with the manager at appropriate times and viewed a sample of documents, including children's learning records.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The provider has not fully identified all aspects of weak practice. On the day of the inspection, the manager and the deputy were not present for a short time when the setting was open. Staff who were in charge did not have the required qualifications. Nevertheless, overall, staff are deployed well and the provider ensures there are adequate staff to supervise children safely at all times. The provider monitors staff performance effectively, identifies training needs and guides staff well to help ensure that teaching practice is consistently good. She reviews children's progress regularly and helps staff plan effectively for any gaps in their learning. Safeguarding is effective. The provider and staff know how to respond to child protection issues. They share information effectively with outside agencies to help safeguard children's welfare. Partnerships with parents are effective. For instance, in response to their feedback, the provider improved arrangements

for sharing information with them to help support continuity in children's experiences even more.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Staff know the children well and effectively plan opportunities for them to follow their interests in play. For example, they provide equipment such as magnifying glasses to help support children's curiosity to examine mini-beasts. Children learn to observe detailed features of the natural world. For instance, staff show them the patterns on the snail's shell. Staff support children effectively to help them build on their mark-making skills. For instance, children learn to write letters and draw shapes, such as circles. Some staff speak children's home languages, which helps children to extend on what they already know. Children who speak English as an additional language benefit from these opportunities.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
The provider does not fully support opportunities for staff and children to develop a clear understanding of the procedures to follow in the event of an emergency. However, she ensures that trained staff are available at all times to provide first-aid treatment to children, should they have an accident. Young children form close emotional bonds with their key persons. They demonstrate an understanding of the routines at the nursery. For instance, when staff announce it is 'group time', they sit on the cushions and get ready for the activity. Staff teach children to make healthy choices. For instance, they provide oranges and milk at snack time and children help themselves to drinking water when they are thirsty. Children behave well, and older and younger children enjoy sharing their experiences with each other.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Young children build on their physical skills. For instance, they learn to climb steps, come down the slide and crawl out through a tunnel. Older children learn to link letters to the sounds they represent and learn to read simple words. This helps them to build on their literacy skills. All children make good progress towards the next stages in their learning.
