She works well with them and their families, and maintains positive relationships.  Children are making progress from their starting points and are confident learners.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 On occasions, the older children are not highly challenged in activities that are planned for the whole group.  The childminder is not providing a wide range of opportunities for children to understand and respect diversity in their wider community.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance planned activities to ensure even the oldest children are highly challenged  broaden opportunities for children to understand the differences between themselves and others in the wider community.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held several discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder uses self-evaluation well to identify her skills and development for the future. She regularly attends training and receives support from local agencies to enhance her knowledge. Parents are well informed regarding their children's learning and development, such as through daily diaries and termly progress discussions. Feedback is gathered from parents and the childminder uses this to help her plan further improvements. The childminder provides a secure environment for children. She is aware of her responsibilities within child protection and can recognise signs and symptoms of abuse. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder communicates well with the other settings where some children attend. She shares children's learning assessments to help ensure children are developing consistently.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder works with parents to create a starting point assessment for the children and gets to know their interests. Children make good progress and are observed regularly by the childminder to help her track their development and identify any gaps in their learning. She successfully plans for all children individually and provides a broad range of resources for them to explore. Children are encouraged to access the environment freely and they confidently make their own choices in learning. The childminder promotes children's learning well during planned activities for children of all ages. For example, during a baking activity, children are asked to count, think about quantities and compare sizes. Children access the attractive outdoor area daily where they exercise and develop their physical skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder promotes positive behaviour from all children and they are kind to each other. Children have opportunities to visit the local community and are socially confident. They are curious and imaginative in their play and enjoy conversations with each other and adults. The childminder implements excellent hygiene routines for children and ensures their health and well-being are supported. She takes all reasonable steps to promote independence, even with the youngest children. For example, they are encouraged to put their coats and shoes on for outdoor play. Children enjoy nutritious home-cooked food. The childminder encourages them to 'have a go' in the making of this to help increase their understanding of a healthy diet.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are happy and confident, and develop skills to support their future learning. They remain engaged and motivated in the purposeful activities available to them. Children enjoy being in the childminder's care. They express their needs and make their own decisions when necessary. They happily talk about their friends and family. Children are well supported in preparing for their next stages of learning, such as starting school.
