This provision is good
Children build close and trusting bonds with the childminder. They demonstrate that they feel very safe and secure in the welcoming home. For instance, they are confident to select resources and ask the childminder to join in with their play. The childminder has developed effective relationships with schools that children attend. She ensures that there is a good exchange of information between herself, parents and teachers, to support continuity in children's care and learning. Children develop good social skills and enjoy interacting with others. For example, they initiate games and adhere to rules, such as sharing and taking turns. Parents speak highly of the childminder's service. They feel that she teaches their children well and provides a safe and nurturing environment in which their children thrive. The childminder makes good use of opportunities to support children's learning outdoors. For example, she encourages them to notice features in the environment,

such as the letters on street signs and car number plates.

It is not yet outstanding because:
On occasion, the childminder does not provide activities and resources which fully engage and challenge older children, to extend their learning as effectively as possible.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

review the planning of activities and resources so they are sufficiently challenging, particularly to fully engage older children's interest and help them build on what they already know.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed a range of activities and discussed these with the childminder, to assess the quality of teaching and its impact on children's learning. The inspector had discussions with the childminder at various points throughout the inspection. She also spoke to children during the inspection and considered their views and experiences. The inspector looked at a sample of documentation. The inspector spoke to parents and took account of their views. She also looked at parents' written feedback. The inspector accompanied the childminder as she collected children from school and observed her communications with school staff.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The qualified childminder continues to update her professional knowledge. For example, she uses training effectively to strengthen her understanding of safeguarding issues. She takes advice from her childminding coordinator to help develop her teaching skills and improve the learning experiences for children. The childminder regularly reviews her provision. She takes account of parents' and children's views to help her identify what she does well and where she can improve her service. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder knows the signs that might indicate that a child is at risk from harm and how to report any concerns about a child's welfare. She carries out regular safety checks within her home to help keep children safe.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder regularly assesses children's learning. She makes plans for children's ongoing progress based upon what they enjoy and what they can do. The childminder supports children's understanding of mathematics well. For instance, during a bowling game, she encouraged children to estimate how many pins had fallen and to work out how many were left. Children develop good hand-to-eye coordination and learn to control their small-muscle movements. For example, they become adept at joining construction blocks to create models and develop good pencil control as they write and draw. The childminder helps children to learn about risks and begin to keep themselves safe. For instance, she teaches them how to cross roads safely on the journey home from school.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children have good opportunities to develop their independence and learn important personal skills. For instance, the childminder gives them plenty of time to assist with care routines, such as taking off their coats and shoes when they come into her home. The childminder provides plenty of praise and encouragement, and helps children to recognise what they are doing well. Children demonstrate that they understand the boundaries within the childminder's home and their behaviour is good. The childminder works alongside parents to help children develop healthy lifestyles. Together, they ensure that children receive nutritious food. Children begin to understand the benefits of healthy eating. For example, they say that 'eating spinach makes their muscles strong'.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress from their starting points and work steadily towards the next stages in their learning. They are active and enthusiastic learners, and show high levels of confidence in their own abilities. Children develop an interest in books. They enjoy looking at books independently and ask the childminder to read stories to them, which helps to form the foundations for good literacy skills. Children learn a good repertoire of songs and sing spontaneously as they play. Children are highly imaginative. They enjoy making up their own stories and demonstrate good language skills as they relate these in detail to the childminder.
