This provision is good

 The childminder skilfully supports children's communication skills. For example, she talks to them as they play, including them in conversations about what is going to happen next and the activities in which they are involved. Children consistently build on their skills and make good progress from their starting points.  The childminder has a good partnership with parents, who speak well of the care she offers their children. She communicates well to ensure they know about their children's progress and how they can extend the learning at home.  Children are very settled and secure in the care of the childminder, who is calm and reflective and offers good emotional security. The childminder helps children to understand about others in the community and how to care for their friends with 'kind hands'.  The childminder keeps her home safe for children to explore and move around with confidence. Children make choices about their play and receive support to develop their

Inspection activities

 The inspector discussed how the childminder evaluates her service and her priorities for improvement.  The inspector looked at the rooms and resources the children use.  The inspector looked at documentation, and discussed the systems the childminder uses to observe and record children's progress.  The inspector observed children's play and their conversations with the childminder in the indoor environment.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to keep children safe and of her child protection responsibilities. She knows how to recognise signs and symptoms that may concern her and how to report these to the appropriate agencies. The childminder reviews and evaluates her work well and takes action to ensure the childcare she provides is continually improving. For example, she has changed the way she observes and assesses children's progress. This has helped her to see any areas where there are gaps in learning and take prompt action to close them. The childminder values training and uses her knowledge to make changes. For example, after a training course, she has made changes to the environment and how she uses resources to capture children's interests and motivate them to learn.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows the children well and considers their learning needs when she arranges activities for the day. For example, she knows the children enjoy playing with toy vehicles and ensures they are available. Children have great fun exploring and playing with torches and lights in a dark tent. They are delighted to see how the torch makes patterns on the tent wall. The childminder encourages children to enjoy natural resources and uses them for creative play. For example, children collect leaves and paint them.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The good relationship between the children and the childminder is evident. Children are delighted to see the childminder and form secure attachments to her. She has created a calm reflective environment for children to enjoy learning as they play. Children are busy and make confident choices about their play. The childminder is very sensitive to their changing needs and supports them well. For example, she recognises when children are hungry and prepares snacks for them. The childminder helps children to feel safe and valued in her care. For example, she recognises when they are feeling less sure of themselves and offers cuddles and comforting words. The childminder helps children to develop an understanding of good hygiene routines. For example, she explains the importance of regular nappy changing and washing hands before meals.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are motivated to learn and make good progress from their starting points. They develop good skills in communication and language and enjoy solving problems. For example, they use their physical skills to open locks and move bolts to discover what is behind the doors of a puzzle. Children develop useful skills for their future learning and for school.
