This provision is good

 The childminder provides a safe, inviting learning environment for children. They easily choose from a wide range of interesting resources and play materials in the well- equipped playroom and outside in the garden.  Children are happy and settled in the childminder's care. She has a warm, caring approach and meets children's emotional and physical needs well.  The childminder plans a broad range of stimulating activities and experiences for children, based on a good knowledge of their interests and stages of development. Children make good progress in their learning from their starting points.  There are strong partnerships with parents overall. The childminder works with them closely and keeps them well informed. For instance, she provides daily updates on children's care and progress, and they work towards the next steps for children's learning together.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has not fully developed highly effective systems for seeking feedback from all parents as part of the ongoing evaluation of the provision.  The childminder has not fully established a highly focused programme of professional development to help develop her knowledge and skills further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen arrangements for seeking the views of all parents about the provision, to help target areas for further improvement  make further use of opportunities to increase knowledge and skills, to help continually raise the quality of the provision and of children's experiences.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children taking part in activities with the childminder and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector had discussions with the childminder about her practice and children's learning and development.  The inspector looked around the areas of the home used by children.  The inspector sampled paperwork, including children's learning journals.  The inspector read letters from parents to take account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibilities towards the children in her care. She knows how to recognise and report any concerns about a child's welfare and keeps her safeguarding knowledge up to date. The childminder is conscientious about children's safety and checks her home thoroughly to identify and minimise any hazards. She reflects on her practice and makes changes that have a positive impact on children's experiences. For example, she has reviewed and developed the outdoor environment to provide interesting, new challenges for the children throughout the year.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder observes children and monitors their progress closely from the start to help them progress well. For instance, during the settling-in period she gathers detailed information from parents about what children already know and can do. The childminder supports children's communication and language skills well. For example, she listens to children carefully and repeats new words. The childminder plans interesting new experiences for children, such as painting on large sheets of cling film outside. She follows children's interests well and supports them as they practise new skills. For instance, children enjoyed rolling their favourite balls down the slide and the childminder guided them skilfully as they learned to climb a little higher on the climbing frame.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is a good role model. She offers children calm, reassuring guidance and praise. Young children go to her readily for a cuddle or to share a toy. They behave well and learn to value and respect one another. For instance, they share their backgrounds and experiences and talk about different families and communities. The childminder helps children to develop an awareness of how to keep themselves healthy and safe. For instance, older children learn about good food and the importance of being active, through projects and daily routines. They enjoy playing outside every day and benefit from the fresh air and exercise.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children grow in independence and make confident choices and decisions, such as which toy to play with and whether to play inside or out. Young children eagerly explore their environment and investigate toys and equipment. They develop good physical skills. For instance, young children begin to paint with a brush and carefully fit the lids back on pens after drawing. Children communicate well and convey their wishes and needs, such as when they are tired or need changing. They show an interest in books and enjoy sharing stories. They quickly gain the skills they need for their future learning.
