This provision is good

 The childminder works well with parents and establishes starting points for children's learning. Parents' written comments show how well the childminder keeps them up to date with their child's learning and development. This helps parents to continue their child's learning at home.  The childminder provides a welcoming play and learning environment in her home. Children develop strong, caring relationships with her and this helps to promote their confidence and self-esteem.  Children make good progress in their learning. The childminder monitors their progress effectively and uses assessment information well. This enables her to identify any emerging gaps in a child's progress and to take any necessary action.  Children's behaviour is good. The childminder is a good role model for children. She teaches them to be kind, considerate and how to use good manners.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Occasionally, the childminder does not use questioning to help children develop their own solutions and ideas.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 use all opportunities to ask questions that enable children to think and find their own solutions in their play.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at suitable times throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including the childminder's self- evaluation and the suitability of those living or working on the premises.  The inspector observed children at play.  The inspector looked at children's learning and development records.  The inspector and the childminder evaluated the effectiveness of an activity.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder evaluates her provision successfully. She requests feedback from parents and reflects on this as part of her self-evaluation process. She uses this information to set priorities for improvement to raise outcomes for children. The childminder seeks out and implements advice and training from a range of sources to improve her practice. For example, by attending training, she has a better knowledge of how she observes and assesses children's learning and development. This helps her to plan interesting activities firmly based on children's current interests and what they need to learn next. The childminder teaches children how to keep themselves safe. For example, during role-play activities children say that their tea is hot and that they should blow on it first to cool it down. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder knows exactly what she must do if she has any child protection concerns.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder interacts purposefully with children. For example, she gets down to children's level, joins in with their play and provides support and guidance. The childminder engages them in meaningful discussion, models clear language and links their play to real-life experiences. For example, children are beginning to understand about their own personal care needs as they feed, change and bathe dolls. Children are developing good hand-to-eye coordination. For example, they fasten the doll's nappy and successfully secure the press studs on the doll's clothing. The childminder supports children's literacy skills effectively. Children practise their early writing skills as they confidently use pens on the wipe board set up inside and chalks on the outside patio.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are very happy and motivated to learn. The childminder ensures she gains all the information she needs about each individual child so that their care needs are effectively met. She provides children with plenty of opportunities to help them to learn about the importance of being healthy. For example, through eating healthy meals and snacks and by having plenty of fresh air and exercise.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress and acquire the skills and knowledge they need for moving on to school. Young children confidently express choices in their play and follow simple instructions. Children count and begin to understand some of the purposes of numbers. For example, they count the number of steps as they walk up and down the stairs. Children have favourite stories and know that print carries meaning.
