This provision is good

 The childminder observes and assesses children's development competently. She thoughtfully provides activities and resources that build on children's learning and interests. For example, the childminder provides books that engage boys who do not usually show an interest in stories. Children make good progress from their starting points in learning.  The childminder skilfully builds on children's strong communication skills. For example, she extends their vocabulary by introducing new words such as 'squishy' and 'slimy' when they play with jelly.  The childminder provides a safe and secure environment where children feel at home. They move around safely and independently.  The childminder reviews her practice consistently and continues to improve children's learning experiences. For example, she has recently introduced interesting activities during which children explore using their senses. Children thoroughly enjoy exploring

different textures and materials, such as dried pasta, jelly, foil and netting.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Occasionally, the childminder does not help children to understand the consequences of their actions and build on their understanding of why some behaviour is unacceptable.  The childminder does not consistently provide children with access to a wide variety of experiences that enables them to increase their understanding of how to use different forms of simple technology.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase children's understanding of the impact of their actions on themselves and others  provide further opportunities for children to explore simple technology and find out how things work.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's activities indoors.  The inspector sampled relevant documentation.  The inspector took account of the views of parents from written and verbal feedback.  The inspector discussed childcare practice with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps her knowledge of safeguarding procedures up to date. She has a good understanding of how to help protect children. The childminder keeps parents well informed about children's welfare and progress. They share concerns and work together successfully to provide a consistent approach in children's care and learning. The childminder competently monitors children's progress and evaluates the effectiveness of the activities she provides. For example, she makes sure that she provides experiences that meet children's learning needs. The childminder improves her knowledge and skills, for example, by doing research and gaining information from childcare websites.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder interacts skilfully with children and builds on their mathematical skills well. For example, she encourages them to count and name shapes when playing with construction blocks. Children confidently and correctly name the colours of blocks. The childminder helps young children become confident in speaking. For instance, they copy words she says and start to form simple sentences, such as 'All fall down'. The childminder reinforces older children's awareness of letter sounds well. She praises children when they achieve and try a new skill.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder successfully enhances children's health and well-being. Children follow good personal hygiene practices, such as putting tissues in a bin after they have wiped their nose. The childminder provides plenty of exercise and outdoor play. For example, she takes children to local parks and provides opportunities for children to build on their good physical skills and coordination. Overall, children play happily alongside others. For example, young children give a train to their older friend to play with. The childminder helps children feel good about themselves, for instance, when she praises them and celebrates their achievements. She is a good role model and deals calmly and sensitively with any disputes.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are confident and emotionally secure. They are prepared well for the next stage in their learning. Children explore and investigate independently. They enjoy learning and join in with activities. They concentrate well and persevere at tasks, such as making a train track. Young children spend a long time rolling toy vehicles down a garage ramp. Children take on responsibilities, such as tidying up after they have finished playing. They are confident around adults and communicate effectively. Children develop a good understanding about the importance of healthy lifestyles.
