This provision is good

 The well-qualified childminder organises the environment efficiently to provide a relaxed learning space for children. She demonstrates a secure knowledge and understanding of how children learn and develop. The childminder supports their play and learning well. Children who have starting points below those expected for their age quickly catch up.  The childminder, her co-childminder and assistant work closely as a team to help ensure that children have all their care needs met. They are committed to providing children with good-quality care and education. Systems for self-evaluation are used to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the setting.  Children form close bonds with the childminder and her assistant. These have a positive impact on their well-being. Children demonstrate that they feel safe and secure.  The childminder makes regular observations and accurate assessments of what children

can do. She uses this information to plan targeted next steps for children effectively.  Children have daily opportunities for fresh air and exercise in the childminder's garden or on trips out to places, such as local parks and woods, a wildlife centre and museum. These help to promote children's good health and support their physical development.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently engage all parents in their children's learning to promote consistency between the setting and home.  Occasionally, the childminder and her assistant overlook opportunities to extend children's thinking skills to higher levels.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 explore more ways to engage all parents to be fully involved in their children's learning to promote consistency between the setting and home effectively  enhance children's opportunities to develop their thoughts and to think through their own ideas.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as records of children's learning and development and a selection of policies and procedures.  The inspector spoke to the childminder, her assistant, co-childminder and children during the inspection. She completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability and qualifications of the childminder and the suitability of her assistant and persons living in the household.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder ensures that both she and her assistant have a good understanding of safeguarding procedures. They know the appropriate action to take if they were to have a concern about a child. The childminder works in close partnership with other professionals to support all children in their care and learning. She spends additional funding effectively, such as the early years pupil premium, to help promote children's development. The childminder regularly meets with other childminders and keeps up to date with developments in childcare practice. She reviews her assistant's performance through regular meetings. The childminder attends additional training to enhance her knowledge and acquire new skills. This contributes towards good teaching practice and has a positive impact on children's learning and development.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder carefully organises the environment so that children have opportunities to play with a wide range of toys and resources. Children lead their own play and choose what they would like to do next. The childminder and her assistant support children's decision-making skills effectively. For instance, children blow and catch bubbles outside and enjoy using play dough to make 'buns'. The childminder and her assistant get down to the children's level and interact purposefully as children play alongside each other. They seize opportunities to incorporate numbers, shapes and colours into children's play. Children learn about each other's similarities and differences, other cultures and ways of life outside of their own experiences. They have opportunities to take part in a variety of events and celebrations, giving them a wider understanding of the world.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder takes time to support new children to settle. She works closely with parents to make sure she meets children's care needs well. The childminder follows children's home routines to promote continuity of care. Children enjoy spending time at the setting. The childminder and her assistant are good role models. They provide clear guidance about what is acceptable behaviour. Children have consistent boundaries and familiar routines. The childminder and her assistant praise children as they recognise their efforts and achievements. Children develop their confidence and self-esteem.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress and gain many skills that they need in preparation for the next stage in their learning, such as moving on to nursery and school. They make friends and learn how to share and take turns. Children develop their concentration as they learn to listen to adults and respond to instructions. They enthusiastically join in with familiar action rhymes during group activities. Children enjoy looking at books with the childminder and practising their early writing skills. They learn about healthy practices, such as handwashing before snacks and meals. Children experience sociable mealtimes and demonstrate good levels of independence.
