This provision is good
The childminder is calm, positive and caring. She creates a warm and nurturing environment where young children are happy and secure. Children form close bonds with the childminder and settle quickly into her care. The childminder is skilled at extending young children's early language development. For example, she listens closely to the sounds they make and responds to them, using simple words. Children happily express themselves using gestures and facial expressions and show good progress from their starting points in learning. The childminder regularly takes children out into the local community and children attend a variety of playgroups and sessions. They have good opportunities to enjoy new experiences and develop their early social skills as they interact with new children. The childminder reviews her provision well and reflects closely on her practice. She accurately identifies strengths and areas for further improvement. She makes positive

changes to help meet the needs of the children and support their good outcomes.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not always provide enough opportunities for young children to make independent choices in their play. The childminder does not gather thorough information from parents about what children can do when they first attend to help her plan precisely for their learning from the very beginning.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed children and the childminder playing together. The inspector examined a sample of documentation, including safeguarding policies and procedures, and children's records. The inspector and the childminder discussed the play activities and children's learning during the inspection, and undertook a joint observation of children's play. The inspector observed the quality of teaching and the impact this has on children's learning.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The well-qualified childminder is keen to develop her skills and takes part in a variety of professional development opportunities. She has frequent visits from her local early years adviser to help her self-evaluation and regularly accesses further training. After recent training, the childminder has improved her understanding of children's individual learning styles and how to support them through play. She has also enhanced her understanding of children's behaviour and how to help them manage their own feelings. Overall, the childminder works well with parents and keeps them informed of their children's development and current achievements. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is up to date with current legislation and fully understands her responsibility to protect children. She knows the signs that children may be at risk and the actions to take.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder observes children regularly and assesses their level of development closely. She has a good understanding of their interests, personalities and individual needs and plans enjoyable ways to support their developmental next steps. For example, babies enjoy exploring musical instruments and electronic toys. They excitedly move their bodies to the music and learn that pushing different buttons causes different effects. The childminder joins in sensitively with children's play and successfully guides their learning. For example, as babies explore a simple animal puzzle, she names the animals they see and makes their sounds. She then finds pictures of the animals in books to help broaden their experiences and babies point to them excitedly.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder's nurturing approach helps children to feel safe and she successfully supports their emotional and physical well-being. She follows their individual routines closely and is attentive to their needs. Babies fall asleep quickly as the childminder gently cuddles and sings to them. The childminder speaks softly to children and shows them great respect. In return, children learn to behave well from an early age and are careful with her toys and home. Children are very sociable and affectionate. For example, babies enjoy going to the childminder for cuddles and passing her toys. They look to share their experiences with her and show their happiness, such as through smiling and giggling. The childminder supports children's physical development particularly well and gives babies plenty of opportunities to stand and build their strength for early walking.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Babies show good curiosity and enjoy exploring sensory toys, carefully picking them up and feeling their textures. They enthusiastically bang and shake musical instruments and copy the childminder's actions. Babies confidently move around their environment and learn to crawl from an early age. They enjoy looking at pictures in books and helping to turn the pages, showing an early interest in literacy. Children quickly learn the skills needed for the next stage in their learning.
