This provision is good

 Children have made firm friendships with each other. They play together beautifully, share their games and take their turn with tolerance and good humour.  The childminder is conscientious about children's safety. She provides a safe, secure environment and helps children to understand how to keep themselves safe.  The childminder effectively continues with children's learning in school. She listens to their reading and helps them to work on their spelling and writing.  Children have secure bonds with the childminder. They play confidently in her care and look to her for guidance and support.  Children benefit from healthy meals and snacks. The childminder tailors her menus to meet children's individual preferences and dietary needs.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder does not challenge children to use their own ideas and explore play opportunities of their choice.  The childminder does not make the most of professional development opportunities that help her to raise the quality of children's play experiences still further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 challenge children more consistently to use their ideas and explore play opportunities of their own choosing  make better use of professional development opportunities that help to further enhance the quality of children's play experiences.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked at areas of the home used by children and the resources available to them.  The inspector observed the children during their play and spoke with the childminder and the children about the activities she provides.  Some documentation was sampled, including evidence of the childminder's suitability and children's records.  The views of parents were taken into account through written feedback.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder updates her knowledge of the local safeguarding procedures through reading and research. She understands the possible signs of child abuse or neglect and what to do if she has concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder has completed appropriate training, such as first aid, to help her to keep children safe. She is well organised and keeps essential documents, such as children's attendance registers, meticulously. Parents praise the childminder for the care she provides their children. They write that their children are happy in the childminder's care. The childminder communicates effectively with parents. She provides daily verbal feedback about their children's experiences as well as making use of text and email.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows the children well. She provides a good range of activities that children enjoy. Children use their imaginations well, for example, as they play 'restaurants' in the toy kitchen. The childminder encourages children to record their menu plans, supporting their growing writing skills. Children persevere at their tasks. They concentrate on colouring pictures and staying within the lines. The childminder plans enjoyable craft activities, such as creating a hedgehog with leaves, paint and glue. Children build models with interlocking bricks and create their own scenarios using model dinosaurs. The childminder has links with the local school that help her to support children's learning in her home.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides children with a comfortable and welcoming home. Children settle quickly when they arrive. They demonstrate good self-esteem and chatter to the childminder and each other about their day in school. The childminder encourages children's conversations and gives them warm praise and approval. Children learn about other lifestyles and cultures. For example, they look at customs associated with Chinese New Year. The childminder places a good focus on good hygiene practice. She reminds children to wash their hands and tidy the table before meals. Children have times to be physically active. For example, they dance to music.
