This provision is good
The childminder is well organised. She implements and maintains a wide range of policies, procedures and records that helps to promote children's safety, welfare and learning. Children make good progress in their learning. The childminder places a strong emphasis on supporting children's communication and language development. For example, she talks to children as they play and introduces new words to help develop their growing vocabularies. Children form strong bonds with the childminder. They demonstrate that they feel safe and secure in her care. For example, they confidently climb onto her knee when they wish to share a book. The childminder is kind, calm and friendly. She is a good role model. She provides a positive atmosphere of mutual trust and respect where children are valued and praised for their efforts and achievements.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not always gather enough information from parents about what children already know and can do when they first start. Sometimes, the childminder does not make the most of opportunities to extend children's understanding and awareness of early mathematical concepts, such as shape and measure.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

obtain more detailed information from parents when children first start to help plan promptly and more precisely provide more opportunities for children to explore and understand early mathematical concepts, such as shape and measure.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. The inspector spoke to children during the inspection. The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder confidently fulfils her role to protect children from harm. She knows what to do should she have any concerns about a child's welfare. She has completed training to enhance her knowledge of wider safeguarding issues. This includes the risk to children of being exposed to extreme views of right or wrong. The childminder regularly reviews her practice to help her to identify areas to improve. She is committed to her continued professional development. For example, she attends training courses and uses online resources to develop her skills and knowledge. Parents are positive about the childminder. They believe their children are well cared for and that they make good progress.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder observes children as they play and assesses their progress. She knows the children very well and plans activities to support their emerging interests. Children talk confidently about their own experiences and are keen to share their own ideas. Children use interlocking bricks to build houses. They talk about their families and describe which rooms they would have in their creations. Children use tweezers to pick up small toys. This helps to develop their muscles and control to support early writing skills. The childminder helps children to learn about the wider community. For instance, she provides opportunities for children to explore festivals and celebrations from a wide range of faiths and cultures.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children arrive confidently and greet the childminder with enthusiasm. They settle quickly and choose their activity from a wide range of accessible resources. Children enjoy regular outings in the community, such as toddler groups where they begin to develop friendships with other children. The childminder helps children to learn how to keep themselves safe. For example, she teaches them about road safety when they go out. The childminder completes risk assessments for her home and outings to help provide children with a safe environment. Children learn about healthy lifestyles. For instance, the childminder provides a range of healthy and nutritious meals and promotes physical activity, such as a sports day in her garden.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress and are working comfortably within the typical expectations for their ages. Children are eager to join in with activities and show good levels of determination and concentration. They are learning to share and take turns, showing consideration and respect for each other. Children are beginning to develop good literacy skills. For example, they enjoy making marks with pens and pencils, listening to stories and recognise sounds that some letters represent. Children are gaining key skills and positive attitudes to support the next stage in their learning, such as the eventual move to school.
