p.1

This provision is inadequate

 The childminder has allowed her public liability insurance to expire. This means that her premises are not insured for the childminding provision. This compromises children's safety.  The childminder's knowledge of procedures to safeguard children with regard to the 'Prevent' duty is not up to date.  Partnerships with other early years settings that children also attend are not fully in place. This means continuity of experiences and learning for the children is not as effective as possible.  The childminder has not focused her training and professional development sufficiently on improving her practice and ensuring knowledge of legislation is current.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The quality of the childminder's teaching is good. She uses her knowledge and skills well to support children to make good progress in their learning.  Children show excitement and enthusiasm. The childminder promotes enjoyable, interesting activities to help them learn. Children show confidence in counting and in their communication skills. This aids their early mathematics and social skills.  The childminder has established good partnerships with parents. There are good strategies in place to engage parents in their child's learning and development.  Relationships between the childminder and children are strong. The childminder provides a family atmosphere that ensures children feel comfortable and happy.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure appropriate insurance is in place to cover the childminding premises 02/02/2018

p.2

Due Date

 improve knowledge of safeguarding issues, with particular regard to responsibilities under the 'Prevent' duty. 02/02/2018

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 build on the partnerships with other early years settings so that information about children is exchanged regularly, to secure continuity of experiences and learning  make the most of training opportunities that further enhance practice and keep knowledge of legislation as current as possible.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interaction with the children and spoke to the childminder and children throughout the inspection.  The inspector had a tour of the areas used for childminding. She also discussed the childminder's self-evaluation and took account of the views of parents spoken with on the day of the inspection.  The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's qualifications and training certificates, including evidence of her suitability and the suitability of all people living on the premises.  The inspector looked at a selection of risk assessments and policy documents, including the safeguarding policy and procedures.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder. She also looked at the planning documentation, children's learning and development files and their assessment records.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is inadequate

The arrangements for safeguarding are ineffective. The childminder has allowed her insurance to lapse. She has also not kept up to date with current safeguarding legislation about how to protect children from radical views and behaviour and how to report any concerns. Although the childminder is qualified, she has not evaluated her provision enough to ensure her knowledge and training are current. She monitors children's learning closely and shares their ongoing progress summaries with parents. However, the childminder does not maximise opportunities to share information about children's learning and development with other providers where children also attend.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children are interested, engaged and motivated in their learning. For example, younger children show high levels of engagement and express themselves creatively as they explore paint. Older children mix colours and describe the colours made. This helps them to express their own creative ideas. Children learn to count and are encouraged to use number language in their play. This supports their mathematical skills well. The childminder supports children's early literacy skills effectively. She skilfully introduces simple rhymes and songs as children play. For instance, when children talk about their paintings, the childminder sings a simple song about a rainbow. Information about what children already know and can do is gathered from parents when they first start attending. The childminder uses this information well to develop entry assessments. This helps her to plan activities that help children develop the skills they need to learn next.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate

The safety and welfare of the children are compromised due to weaknesses in leadership and management. However, the childminder provides a welcoming environment for children and their families. Children settle well and enjoy the nurturing, caring approach of the childminder. She is an effective role model and encourages children to take turns and behave well. Risk assessments are implemented effectively, which helps to minimise risks within the home and on trips out. Parents talk positively about how much their children enjoy attending.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and development. They receive good support that prepares them well for their move on to school. Children enjoy learning and actively seek out challenges. They learn to listen well, follow instructions and develop good early literacy and mathematics skills. Children are inquisitive, become absorbed in their play and develop good imaginations. They make marks in a variety of ways and use good small-muscle movements, showing increasing control. They share their ideas of their representations well. Children make independent choices and play well together.
