Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not complete the required progress check for children aged between two and three years. She does not demonstrate a good understanding of her responsibility to complete this within the required timeframe.  The childminder does not provide children with a good level of challenge during play. She does not accurately use information gained from observations and assessments to plan effectively for what children need to learn next.  The childminder has not established ways to capture the views of others in helping her to identify ways to develop the provision.  The childminder does not gather information from parents regarding what their children know and can already do when they first start at the setting.  The childminder has not yet established ways to enhance her continuing professional development and raise the quality of teaching to a good level.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Parents provide high levels of praise for the childminder. They state, 'I find the childminder to be very calm, organised and very reliable. She is an excellent, caring and flexible childminder'.  Children have good opportunities to participate in physical activities. The childminder takes children on regular outings, including trips to the park. Furthermore, she provides children with opportunities to make healthy choices during mealtimes.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure the required progress checks for children aged between 24 and 36 months are completed within the appropriate timeframe 01/02/2018

p.2

Due Date

 use information gained from observation and assessment, to accurately plan for what children need to learn next and offer further challenge during their play. 01/02/2018

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 develop ways to capture the views of children and parents to help accurately identify ways to drive improvements to the provision  implement ways to gather information from parents regarding what their children know and can already do when they first start at the setting  make use of professional development opportunities to update and enhance understanding of best teaching practice.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed an evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has implemented suitable self-evaluation procedures. However, she does not yet gather the views of others to help her identify areas for improvement. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder demonstrates a suitable understanding of local safeguarding procedures. She knows how to respond to any concerns she has regarding the welfare of a child. The childminder ensures children's safety and well-being are well promoted. She involves children in managing their own risks during play. She talks to them about hazards they can identify and encourages children to think of ways of addressing these. The childminder has established effective ways of working with other early years providers where children attend. She attends regular meetings and shares assessment information. This helps to complement children's learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Teaching is variable. The childminder does not make full use of professional development opportunities to raise her quality of teaching. The childminder completes regular observations and assessments of children's learning. However, she does not use this information to plan activities that offer children a good level of challenge. Children become distracted from their learning. Children have a suitable range of resources to choose from. However, some resources do not provide children with opportunities to extend their learning. The childminder does not ensure the required progress check is completed for all children between the ages of two and three years. She does not provide parents with a written summary of their assessment that outline children's strengths and any support needed.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder does not yet gather key information from parents about what their children know and can already do. This does not help to form an accurate assessment when children first start at the setting. Children are well settled. The childminder is nurturing and caring. She provides flexible introductory visits for children. Children behave well. The childminder provides regular praise as children play. This helps to promote their self-esteem. Children follow suitable hygiene practices.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Due to weaknesses in teaching, children are not provided with opportunities to make enough progress. Despite this, children are confident learners. They learn to write their name and this helps to promote their literacy skills. Children learn to develop self-care skills, including dressing themselves. They develop good mathematical skills. Children line up various objects and count them. They make estimations in their play and match numbers of objects together. Children are equipped with the basic skills needed for their eventual move on to school.
